heres a review over at DVDFILE,

http://www.dvdfile.com/software/revi...oughnecks.html

but sadly its not as in depth as they used to do :( it doesnt really cover what I wanted to know, is it the FULL series? I expect it will be, but they dont really confirm it as such.
Still 4 dvds holding all them dvds worth of info, surley they must have compressed it all down? as it was 7 dvds wasnt it, now onto 4. I can only guess the old dvds were not very full up (I hope).

but you do get 4 Bonuce episodes? what are they, just the ones released on a seperate dvd at the end of the dvd run I didnt get the last dvd you see only the 1st 6.

Kevin M. Dean 06-24-05 04:13 PM

I think it's pretty obvious that this set is simply the original 8 discs put on 4 double-sided discs for a cheaper combined cost. I wouldn't expect any other difference.

Romerojpg 06-24-05 04:21 PM

Ahhh they are double sided, I didnt see that part :) Thanks for pointing that out thats cleared that up well :)

nemein 06-24-05 04:46 PM

Unfortunately the review doesn't mention if the commentaries are included :( Guess we'll have to wait until the set is actually released in a week or so...

Ianscloset 06-24-05 05:29 PM

I LOVE Starship Troopers the movie, and I remember catching this every morning when I had to get up early for school. When the first started releasing the DVD's I was pysched, that was untill I found out the $25 a piece pricetag they had on them so I held off on buying them...Untill Now!!!

To be fair, not everyone is intimately aware of the series or the previous release's flaws when they review a DVD. The good ones do research, but most just give their opinion of what they have in front of them.

boe 06-25-05 09:11 AM

It seems odd that Sony has made so much money off of this series that they even re-released the DVDs (not as frequent for TV shows to have re-released DVDs) and yet they refuse to finish the series. Hell, they could probably not only finish the series but even make more campaigns and make a fortune. I heard the story about the Sony canning the company that made these over a dispute - doesn't mean there aren't other CGI companies.

blindrocket 06-26-05 01:55 PM

This is fantastic news. It's really a great show. Sure it could have been a tad better if it was for mature audiences, but it is still great.

According to the info at Amazon now it sounds like it's just a repack of the individual disks, unfortuantely STILL no mention of the commentaries :(

# Includes The Pluto Campaign, The Hydora Campaign, The Tophet Campaign, The Tesca Campaign, The Zephyr Campaign, The Klendathu Campaign, Trackers, and The Homefront Campaign
# Four bonus episodes: Pluto and Beyond, Propaganda Machine, Marooned, Courtmartial of Lt. Razak

Well, if Tesca is remastered in 5.1, then in any case, it'll be worth the upgrade.

Clicking on the thumbnail for this item on Amazon comes up with the following:

Seems the cover may have been adjusted.

nemein 06-30-05 02:10 PM

Here's the pic from the sony site... looks like they might have compressed things such that they didn't have to use dual sided DVDs. If that is the case I'm pretty sure we can say good bye to the commentaries :(

nice find, nemein. i had a few milliseconds of glory before you showed up with that picture...

i prefer the new cover... but one sided discs?

nemein 06-30-05 02:15 PM

That's how it's looking to me... of course there's no additional info on the Sony site either :( http://www.sonypictures.com/homevide...396106567.html

Well, shit. Now I'm not sure whether or not to keep my order. IIRC, each disc only had five ~22 miniute episodes, which comes out too roughly 110 minutes of video. Doubling that up to 220 would put some serious squeeze on the extras such as commentaries.

I just wished we could get some definate info on whether or not Tesca has been remixed to 5.1 or not.

EDIT: Well, looks like I'm screwed anyway. Amazon has already shipped my order. As soon as I get it, I'll let you all know what the true details are. I probably won't get it until next Tuesday evening as my UPS driver has been running late in the evening lately, and I'll be at work till 7:30 or so.

Romerojpg 07-02-05 07:42 AM

The new cover art is not as good as the funky robot thats for sure. sounds like it was a good job I havent sold my old dvds yet :D
Cannot wait to see how this turns out, very odd release! considering its been reviewed on DVDFILE! so did they get the real dvds to review? or previews? time will tell.

Ronin4223 07-02-05 10:16 AM

Anyone else notice that the discs are now gone from the picture?

boe 07-02-05 02:35 PM

There used to be a petition to continue the series - is that completely dead now?

nemein 07-03-05 09:27 AM

From the DVDtalk review that is up now it looks like the commentaries were axed :( http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=16639 It would have been nice to have a more compact form of the series but I don't feel the need to repurchase a set that is a downgrade.

minguy 07-05-05 12:11 PM

Compact is good but this is downright draconian.

Too bad about the commentaries. They were informative and amusing and brought some depth to the proceedings.

But I guess Tesca was upgraded to 5.1? Hopefully someone can eventually do an a/v comparison between the set and the individual releases.

freudguy 07-05-05 01:31 PM

None of the reviews I have read have mentioned anything about the "missing" last episodes. Is it clear whether or not the unproduced were finally produced for this set?

Read the DVDTalk review. It specifically mentions that the 4 bonus episodes are indeed the clip shows.

Liquid Death 07-05-05 05:38 PM

I can't imagine why they would finish the series if they can't even give us a complete package of the previously released DVDs (ie the commentaries) in this set.

Mike Lowrey 07-06-05 10:36 AM

Well, got my set today. Immediately checked to see if Tesca was remastered in 5.1 and it is, so at least we're getting that improvement. Of course, don't know about the PQ of Zephyr yet, but I doubt that's changed, but who knows.

However, sadly enough, doesn't look like the commentaries made it over. Instead we get some photo galleries. But then again, that's what you get when you combine two campaigns on single-sided discs.

Packaging is actually quite cool. An outer slip case housing 4 clear slimpacks, similar to the Hellboy DC. No digipak here.

Romerojpg 07-06-05 11:37 AM

So every dvd that was released before is on the new set, as I never got the last dvd released as I couldnt beleve how much cash I had sent on the show :D

Josh Z 07-07-05 10:49 PM

Scott has updated the DVDTalk review to indicate that the Tesca eps are remastered in 5.1.

He might also want to add that the Zephyr campaign suffers from the same bad transfer the original disc had. Lots of VHS-type video noise in certain scenes.
