I think everything is great except for Meet The Fockers which is utter crap. Saw it in the theater & about half way in I took a phone call & just went outside & talked on the phone for about 20 minutes.

Memento Mori IMO isn't that great either & there are much better films similar to it but it's still better than most of the other stuff out recently.

Of coarse, no new DVD purchase today is acceptable unless you bought the Errol Flynn Collection.

Not familiar with Snake of June or Primer -- what can you tell me about them?

NatrlBornThrllr 04-19-05 08:04 PM

Primer is excellent. It was made on a shoestring budget ($25,000 or so), and was submitted to Sundance. It got accepted, generated some buzz, and ended up winning a couple of awards there (including the Grand Jury Prize). It was picked up for distribution, had a brief theatrical run, got a handful of nominations at this year's Independent Spirit Awards, and now it's finally on DVD. In a nutshell: it's a complex sci-fi drama dealing with the complex side of time travel...and it doesn't bother to pace itself so the viewer can be babied along.

On a side note, Memento Mori is a short story by Jonathan Nolan (that inspired his brother Chris' cinematic adaptation). If anybody gets a chance to read the short story, do so. It's a relatively short read, 10 or 15 minutes...and it's well worth your time.

even lower (or higher depending on your perspective) $7,000 budget + $30,000 for a 35mm blow-up so he could screen it at Sundance.

I'm pretty sure he means Memento Mori, the Korean horror film, and 2nd and best installment in the "trilogy" (in a somewhat loose sense) which also comprises Whispering Corrridors and Wishing Stairs.

A Snake of June is from Shinya Tsukamoto, the director of Tetsuo aka "The Ironman". It deals with fetichism and couple dynamics. Good acting and plenty of style, atmosphere, and nakedness. Merely a couple of moments of weird imagery make this film more accessible than some of his other work. Tsukamoto also acts, he plays the part of the voyeur photographer who blackmails a married woman and forces her to discover her sexuality by imposing increasingly lude exhibitionist "games" upon her. Worth a look.

Primer was an amazing experience. I both loved it and hated it. I loved it for the ideas it brought up and for the feel it had - it had a very straight forward, non-formulaic style. I hated it because I think it drove me partially insane in trying to understand it. Still highly recommended though.

That's the same reaction I had to a Danish film I just watched, Reconstruction. Sorry for the threadjack, but I just finished the DVD review like 30 minutes ago and wrote nearly the same kind of description. :)

I heard the video grain of Primer is pretty bad. Anyone care to confirm this?

Oh, I know. I was just thinking out loud about the coincidence that his short story has the same title as a Korean movie.

Is "Spit on your Grave" the 70's writer goes into the woods and get raped by some messed up outback boys? I heard there were different versions of that movie if that is the same one.

Yes, the one to get is the Elite Millenium Edition. The Joe Bob Briggs commentary track is one of the best ever. It's not only informative, it's absolutely hilarious.
