Yep it sucks because it's 1 movie on a short list of 5 that I absolutely must have on DVD. The others are The Naked Prey, Going Berserk, Jekyll and Hyde...Together Again, and Race For Your Life Charlie Brown.

From the Warner Home Video/Home Theater Forum chat, March 2005:

"[WarnerHomeVideo] However Bill Murray fans will be happy to know that QUICK CHANGE is coming out this Fall. "

Besides The African Queen, and maybe Twilight Zone: The Movie, I'd have to say that this ranks as the strangest movie to have been withheld on DVD for this long. I just don't get why this has been held up for 8 years.

Groucho 04-16-05 10:57 AM

This movie is one of my all-time favorites, but it bombed hard at the box office and since everybody involved has disowned it. It's on my "most wanted" list, but I'm not surprised it's taken so long to come out.

On DVD in Norway and Sweden.

I still won't believe it until I see a hard date and pre-order on amazon.

Why do you think that is? People's natural fear of clowns? It's one of my favorites too. I remember being interested when it came out, but I didn't see it til it hit home video because I didn't go to the theater much at that time & I was probably a bit wary after the waste of time that was Ghostbusters 2. For years it bothered me that Quick Change was unknown & What About Bob (which I thought was mostly crap) was a huge hit.

Bill made some unusual commercials for the movie that I hope will be included in the eventual DVD release. The one I remember best was a fake news story where Bill discussed current films using the same chart board that he used to use on SNL. He ended it by forecasting "a Quick Change/Lambada summer." Funny at the time. A little sad now to see how right he was. I think another had him sneaking around & rushing to the safety of a boat taking off while he offered to refund any disappointed viewer's money - if they could find him.

I was just doing a search for info on a release for this title today. I'm suprised that Anchor Bay hasn't tried releasing this movie on DVD especially considering some of the more mainstream titles they've recently released.

"Bluff-toe-ney."

A terrible marketing campaign. The first trailer I saw for the film had sentimental music played over footage over Murray sitting on the subway in clown makeup. It made the film look like a boring "crying on the inside" clown drama. In fact I think it even had Murray's "crying on the inside" line played out of context.

Because of the horrific ads, I had no interest in this film, but ended up getting free tickets to a sneak preview when it opened theatrically, and loved the movie ever since.

"Graham. You have a gun. Shoot him."

William Fuld 04-17-05 07:16 PM

Bill Murray didn't disown the film. He showed it and talked about it last year at Elvis Mitchell's class at Harvard and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music retrospective devoted to him.

I don't know about that first one... but the one with his running and then speeding off on a boat offering to refund your money was a commercial for The Man Who Knew Too Little. He's holding up a sign with the title of the movie on it as he shouts "Remember the name!"

It's on the DVD release.

Agreed on all the affirmatives for this film. One of Bill Murray's best movies. I hear the novel by Jay Cronley that it's based on is also very funny.

joliom 04-18-05 06:38 AM

They're on a bluftomay!

darkhawk 04-18-05 09:06 AM

When they do release it, I hope that it's an uncut version. Since on vhs they cut or shorten scenes.

Such as? Link?

darkhawk 04-18-05 09:26 AM

Spoiler:
On VHS, all the hostages picked Geena Davis to go next. Suddenly you see Bill Murray and Geena Davis come out of the bank, her shirt is ripped.

In theaters, after Geena Davis was picked, it shows Murray and Davis talking and he's taping the money to her hiding it under her shirt and that Murray was cleaning the clown makeup off, since he distroyed all the cameras. Then to fool the cops more, Murray rips Davis' shirt to make it more convincing. The two of them then come from the bank.

I saw this in the theater and when I bought the VHS tape, the scenes were missing.

Hold on to your transfer, you'll need a transfer to re-board.

Hold on to your transfer...

I'd pay $50 to have this movie on DVD right now. Not to watch, but you know, for kicks.
