If the original theatrical version is included via branching the only reason to duble dip would be DTS (if its not there) or the extras on the old release no? (Which are admittedly very good). My favourite was probably the one looking at the real Gladiatorial Games. :)

Yeah, if it does not include the previous commentary, then it looks like the original 2-Disc would be worth keeping for that and the 'Real' Gladiator Documentary.

I'll probably wait to read a review and see if this version is better, because frankly, I think the Theatrical Version was pretty damn tight in terms of pacing and perhaps a longer version would throw that off. More than likely, unless that documentary is out of this world and the extended version an improvement or at least as good, I'll stick with the Signature Collection set.

I will do the same. I actually thought the original version could have used a 15 minute or so trim so a longer version could be really clunky. Anyone know what the 17 minutes consists of?

No, no. The extended footage marker will likely be done the way they were done on the Alien Quadrilogy set. ie. They were selectable within the menu to pop on whenever extended footage was shown. When I watched my set, I watched Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection with that on.

Anyway, I love it when I'm vindicated for a previously rejected entry for a DVDAficionado listing. :p (I submitted an entry for a Gladiator Special Edition back in February and was rejected.)

Most probably, but at least a few of those scenes were cut due to the level of violence in them, (ie. ratings worries, I'd imagine.) There was extended footage of the Germanic barbarian battle at the beginning, some short cuts of violence in the gladiatorial battles. Others had totally unused scenes that were of character development type stuff. There was also some extension to the escape scene that was cut due to some torture scene or something that's easily been surpassed by almost anything in the Passion of the Christ movie.

Being "unrated" is no longer the bad thing that it used to be for a movie. Now, they tout it on every cover they can as the UNRATED EDITION!
