Where To Go Now With Vincent Price?
Having just bought and LOVED the very cheap double of House On The Haunted Hill and Last Man On Earth, I was wondering if someone could give some pointers for some other decent Vincent Price movies?
On a side note, are there any better versions of Last Man On Earth out there anywhere? Thanks! |
Next up
House of Wax The Abominable Dr. Phibes The Oblong Box Masque of Red Death Tower of London MgM has put out some great Midnite movie double features if you can find them...but catch house of wax, before the new film catches on |
How are the 3D versions of Last Man On Earth and House On Haunted Hill???
|
I wonder if Conqueror Worm or Dragonwyck are coming out on DVD over here any time soon. I think they're both out in the UK.
|
My favorite Vincent Price films are:
Theatre of Blood Tingler, The Masque of the Red Death Fly, The House of Usher Abominable Dr Phibes Haunted Palace, The House of Wax Theatre of Blood and The Abominable Dr Phibes are somewhat related as the killings in the films have a very dark-edged humor to them. The Conqueror Worm (The Witchfinder General), may be Vincent Price's best film, but its not available in Region 1. And for better quality, MGM just released a double feature of Panic in Year Zero/Last Man on Earth. |
My personal favorite, The Pit and the Pendulum is a must. He's hilarious in the great The Raven (on a Midnite Movie with the lesser The Comedy of Terrors, which he's still worth seeing in.) Other great ones with different sides to his acting include The Song of Bernadette, Laura (which also includes the Biography on him with more recs) and then there's always Edward Scissorhands. Leave Her to Heaven is a great film and he's great in it, but it's a very small part.

Two words: The Tingler!
|
I loved The Haunted Palace and is my favorite. Another good one is Masque of the Red Death. The Conqueror Worm I also like but haven't been able to find on DVD yet. Vincent is one of my favorite actors of all time.

In before obligatory link to imdb showing every film he ever appeared in.

Personally, I think this is his best film. |
Add my vote to these:
Comedy of Terrors The Conqueror Worm The Oblong Box The Pit and the Pendulum Theatre of Blood Tower of London Twice-Told Tales Plus there's a good double-feature of two of the Fly movies floating around out there. |

He delivers a great comic performance in CHAMPAIGNE FOR CAESAR. The HOUSE OF USHER?PIT AND THE PENDULUM double bill is a must have, as is THEATRE OF BLOOD.
|
He is my favorite actor of all time!

My Fav Price Films: Pit and the Pendulum Haunted Palace The Fly These are excellent films! |
Definitely get the Midnite Movie line, anything he's in will be entertaining; although some more than others. The Fly/Fly 2 double disc is also great.
I'm a big Price fan and have collected most of his early horror. Now I'm working on his previous work, like Laura, to round out the collection. |
Most of Price's best work is on DVD. I would recommend MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, THE ABOMBINABLE DR. PHIBES, HOUSE OF WAX and TALES OF TERROR (he plays 3 roles, and gives very different performances in each segment in that one) as your next steps.
If you're willing to venture beyond horror, I would further recommend LAURA and CHAMPAGNE FOR CAESAR -- he gives outstanding supporting performances in both. |

To answer this I must ask, did you buy the WIDESCREEN version or the version where House is in widescreen but Last Man is not? I bought the second version to begin with and that copy is absolutely horrible, it looks terrible! But the one where it says WIDESCREEN VERSION or something to that extent, is much better in picture clairity. My Fav Price Films: Pit and the Pendulum Haunted Palace The Fly These are excellent films! It was the widescreen version |
Fly and Return of the Fly Double Feature

Yep! Ordered mine from DVDSoon

Coincidently I just watched Fall of the House of Usher and thought it was pretty good. There are definitely some creepy bits to go along with all the cheesy schlock. But I mean that in a good way. I have it on LD in a double bill with The Pit and the Pendulum and don't know if it is available on DVD.

Don't forget about THE BAT (1959) watched it last night.
