Good thing I wasn't actually involved in the cover art battle such that I could lose it.

I don't own a copy yet so I'll definitely be picking this up assuming it doesn't suffer too bad from compression.

How you seen the cover art as shown at DVD Town?

Amaray case housed inside a cardboard sleeve rather than a typical slipcase. Same as Men in Black - Deluxe Edition, if I'm not mistaken. Very cool.

I don't know if the mono track is going to be that of the original theatrical or a mono remix of the 5.1 or whatever, but it doesn't matter to me. Not really. The inclusion of the full-length documentary and other extras from the 25th Anniversary Edition, the cool new packaging (yes, I'm a sucker for good packaging), and the commemorative photo journal are easily enough for me. The original mono track will be icing on the cake, if included.

The one difference I seem to notice between the original and what might be the remixed track is during a scene in Quint's boat. Quint has told Brody and Hooper the story of his experience on the U.S.S. Indianapolis, and they have all sobered up from their joking mood a few minutes before. It's dark outside, quiet inside. Then a distant sound is heard over the creaking of the Orca, and Hooper identifies it as a whale.

When I first saw Jaws, the sound of that whale was creepy as hell, especially in the wake of Quint's tale. It established an incredibly eeire mood that I thought was great. Creepy and eeire, when associated with the sea, spawn wonderful ideas in one's mind of mysterious creatures of the deep. The imagination runs wild. It's cool and scary at the same time. All this from one ten-second sound.

In newer versions of the movie, the whale sound has been redone with something akin to the whale song from George and Gracie in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Now, nothing against that movie or its whales, but their song is not scary in the least. I don't know if this change is a result of soundtrack remixing or what, but it's definitely a change, and not a good one in my opinion. I hope the old whale sound returns with this new release.

Even if it doesn't, I'm still psyched. This is the definitive Jaws DVD for which I have longed. I'm even somewhat tempted to get the entire collection when I pick this one up. (I actually really like Jaws: The Revenge, and I realize I'm probably in the minority with that feeling. Jaws 3 pretty much sucks, but you gotta have a complete set.) Not sure yet. Might get Jaws 2, though. Great movie, great release, and I'm not really expecting a double-dip. Least I hope there's none. Good time to load up.

I'm pretty sure it will the be original theatrical mono mix...but I see many still want to speculate

It would'nt be a definitive Jaws release without that mix

It will lead to many irate customers who may boycott their release(s).

Anyone wanna count the times Universal has screwed up a major DVD release?

Thank you, Buford. DVD Town must have changed the URL of the picture I linked.

No problem. Thanks for the link. My hunch is they don't allow hotlinking. It was a red X right off the bat.

Here's part of an ad showing the specs confirming the two-hour documentary and original mono soundtrack inclusion.

Nice! So there will be no reason to keep the old version, right?
