New Karate Kid misframed

Just watched the new widescreen version of Karate Kid with the commentary track and heard around 11:40 into the movie that it was misframed so I decided to compare it with the full frame version I have and it definately is. Portions of the top and bottoms of the screen are chopped off on the widescreen version. I compared various scenes throughout the whole movie and it seems the whole movie is misframed. I dont know how to post screenshots to compare the two versions so if someone can it would be appreciated. I doubt there is any word on a corrected versions like Back to the Future. Has anyone heard anything?

or it was filmed open matte, then the mattes were placed on it for the theater. if the sides aren't cut off, then its ok

The sides were not cut off...however, like I said, it was mentioned in the commentary by the director I believe, that it is misframed about 11m and 40s into the film.

I believe it was filmed in open-matte, and the full screen version shows the fully filmed image, without the mattes. There was a thread about this when the discs first came out, and someone mentioned the fact that the director was probably only used to seeing the film in open-matte on cable, like the rest of us, and the widescreen version looks a bit cramped now.

According to IMDB it was shot in 1.85:1, and the HD version I have off SHO looks fine.

More likely, it was shot in 1.33:1 and soft-matted for 1.85:1, which explains why the full-frame has the basically the same horizontal dimensions as the widescreen version.

We had this discussion before on the other Karate Kid thread.

There isn't an error in framing on the DVD, i.e. Columbia TriStar haven't screwed it up. The commentary is merely commenting on the theatrical matting, which is indeed very tight and even amateurish in places. So no surprises that the cinematography didn't win any awards.

I checked the new Region 1 against my previous Australian Region 4 release and it was virtually identical in the framing too.
