Thanks!

I can't speak for all versions, but PowerDVD 6 plays PAL.

The computer program? PAL or NTSC don't make any difference on a computer display.

So a PAL R0 DVD Could play on PowerDVD? I need to know, because I am going to buy the Tartan 2-disc Battle Royale DVD.

Maybe I can buy those Bruce Lee movies, the R1 versions suck ass

Why? The PQ is horrid! It is valuable only because of the subtitled extras...

I hear only because of the "ghosting", which would not appear, because "The computer program? PAL or NTSC don't make any difference on a computer display.", and the ghosting is because of the NTSC-PAL conversion.

If not, what release should I buy, then?

Will a R0 disc play in a DVD-ROM drive that is encoded for, say, R1? I.e., will it trigger the "disc region coding isn't compatible" error? Or are R0 discs effectively region-free? I've never tried, I usually use a region-decoding media player like VideoLan or use PowerDVD in conjunction with Remote Selector.

If only that were true... get the Starmax release. While not without fault (subtitle issues on added scenes), the Starmax version has vastly superior PQ.

Yes, a R0 disk will play on any DVD player, regardless of the players' set region.

In you computer, there is no such thing as PAL and NTSC.

What you need to do is skirt region codes.

If your DVD drive isn't pretected (RPC-1), then DVD genie works fine. Free download @ http://www.inmatrix.com/files/dvdgenie_download.shtml

If your DVD drive is protected (RPC-2), then you need DVD Region-Free: http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-free.htm (this can easily be found in "certain" sites).

Yes, if you can find region-free firmware for your DVD-ROM and you aren't afraid of flashing your drive (and taking a small risk on killing it if you aren't careful) that's the way to go.

Your DVD player and/or OS may also be locked into your current region. They only allow a small number of changes. However you can get around that with software patches as well.

You will have the PAL speedup with PowerDVD. WinDVD has a feature that slows down PAL playback although you'll only get analog output (I believe only 2-channel) when using it.

I know of someone that gets the region error on a PC DVD drive when trying to play a R0 release. He also couldn't set his region to 0, so AFAIK, he still can't play R0 discs on his PC. YMMV.

I used a region free firmware. While I knew what I was doing and didn't damage my drive, the firmware did downgrade performance when reading CD-Rs. So I patched it back and now I use the DVD-Region free program and it works perfect.

PDVD gives PAL speedup?? You sure??

PAL is inherently sped up due to its framerate. PowerDVD doesn't provide the ability to slow it down 4% to normal speed.

jmj713 03-21-05 01:43 PM

WinDVD has a TruePAL playback feature.

Class316 03-21-05 02:26 PM

I know PAL is by nature a bit faster, but would it show if played in a R2 DVD player?

For film sources, yes.
