Well, it's obviously not in Region 1 yet, so you're probably better off posting this query in the International forum.

I'm personally hoping for an Ebert commentary when it hits R1!

there is a pricey limited edition R2 box set sold here...

lol, could happen. Ebert actually gave this film a thumbs up when it was released in theaters. He says he still thinks the cut shown at Cannes was the worst film ever shown at Cannes, but he said he liked the cut that was released into theaters......

Let me get this straight. Ebert thought the cut shown at Cannes was the worst film ever shown there and yet he liked the theatrical version enough to award it a . Could they have really improved the pic that much in the editing room?

i talked to Gallo about the differences. the cannes cut was a 26 minute longer work in progress, just an assembly of scenes really, that included an 8 minute scene where he changes his shirt. the cannes people persuaded him to show the workprint.

also, Technicolor was still developing a new color process for 16mm that Gallo was waiting for. the film hadn't gone thru this process yet, which is what gave it a unique, haunting visual quality.

If such a thing weren't possible, why would anybody need professional editors? It's the difference between proper pacing, eliminating redundancies, etc., and not having those things.

If you saw an assembly workprint of even your most favorite film, you'd be bored to tears by it. There's a reason studios don't just release dupes of the A/B camera rolls to theatres.

This was one of the best films I saw last year. I'm waiting patiently for a Region 1 release announcement.

agreed. I wish more people could have seen it. My patience is being tested... haven't heard a single word about an un-optically-censored version in any region.

Wellspring released the film theatrically in the U.S. but they've sold the DVD rights to Columbia/Tristar. No release date set yet.

That's interesting, really? I think the ending of the film is good the way it is now. Quite powerful. I've watched the Japanese disc, but just rented it (wish I would have had time to listen to the commentary track too). I would rather buy an uncensored version though, so I'll just have to wait I guess.

i didn't think i'd get called on oversimplifying the story. the way he explained it to me was as a "deal" he made with his backers. fremaux, at cannes, was pushing very hard to see it. and even though he (VG) had it in his contract that he would not let the film play there due to his experience with Buffalo 66, he negotiated an extension for "delivery" so he could complete the film with the new digital blow-up process from Technicolor by agreeing to let cannes have a look. he felt it was in such a state that they'd be crazy to accept it and he'd get his extension.

and i'm trying to remember this from september but I think he told me there was no ending at that point. he hadn't shot it yet because the location he was set on wasn't available.
