Willy Wonka and the Choclate Factory (1971) SE?

Whats the betting there will be an SE release of this in 2005, what with the Johnny Depp remake and all? :)
I have it on VHS somewhere, while it shows it age (IMO) it has fun songs, great design and costumes, and a wonderful comic/sinister performance by Gene Wilder as Wonka (and Roy Kinnear as Mr. Salt) :)
I may buy it if it comes out (nostalgia). :)

REL77 03-15-05 07:12 AM

There was just an SE of this i believe like a year ago, so I doubt it

grim_tales 03-15-05 07:17 AM

OK, thanks. I didnt realise that. I saw a R2/R4 release out a while ago but wasnt sure if it was an SE. :)

Actually, the 30th Anniversary Edition was released 4 years ago.

Cameron 03-15-05 08:09 AM

the special edition holds up well, after they got the WS version out, I have no complaints...an upgrade from the snapper would be good.

The current SE is great (great a/v, commentary, and making-of)... but Warner may be able to improve it a little bit:

- Add the 25th anniversary trailer (on the original DVD)
- Add the music/effects track from the laserdisc
- Add the original mono track

grim_tales 03-15-05 09:32 AM

Was there ever a R2 release of the 30th Anniversary Ed.? :)

Not that I've seen any evidience of . . .

Jazzbutcher 03-15-05 10:39 AM

I disagree that it shows its age. The people who made the film made a concerted effort to obscure where and when the film takes place. The only line in the movie that really dates it IMHO is when Violet yells out, "What is this, a freak out!?!"

Two of my faves:

Mike Teevee: Bam! You're dead!
Wonka: Wonderful to meet ya Mike!

Mike Teevee: Wait 'til I get a real one. Colt 45. Pop won't let me have one yet, will ya, pop?
Mr. Teevee: Not 'til you're 12, son.

Well I see what you mean, it doesn't scream "70s" at you, but don't things like the school, old corner shops etc look old fashioned? I doubt you'd see them any more, even in European towns (the film looks like it was shot in Germany/Belgium IMO).

I love the bit when the German newscaster is interviewing the gloop family and Mr. Gloop eats the microphone

Wonka (whispers): Its' an educated eggdacator.
Mr. Salt (snorts): Its a lotta nonsense!
:D

Then the part when everyone is trapped in the lift and they have to go back through the small door, with Mr. Salt yelling "We just came through there!"

I'm willing to bet that they release a "limited edition" with a free movie pass for the remake

Willy Wonka: the Tricked Out Explosive Edition.

Bacon 03-20-05 03:15 PM

i agree that hollywood sucks, but technically its not a remake. the dahl estate (family members of the late Roald Dahl author book) never liked the original movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. so they allowed tim burton to direct this new movie, which will more closely resemble the book.

ignition 03-20-05 06:30 PM

If you've ever read the original book and can think of any other actor that better resembles the character of Willy Wonka than Johnyy Depp I'd love to know who.

The new Wonka looks to be a much better adaptation of Will Wonka than the 1971 version ever was.

I saw the trailer for the new version when I saw Robots and I had quite the opposite opinion. I thought it didn't look very good at all. Everyone has their opinion.

Yes, and when these family members die, their relatives will have someone remake it too..

JetSter735180 03-21-05 01:11 PM

I did not know it was a REAMKE! In fact, I beleive the Title is "CAHRLIE and The Chocolate factory"

Note the "CHARLIE" at the begin of the title! so it is a sequel....

Rogue588 03-21-05 01:16 PM

It's not a sequel. It's a REAMKE! Willy Wonka And the Chocolate Factory was retitled 'cuz the studio was afraid that the public would think they were being racist by calling it "CAHRLIE And the Chocolate Factory" since it was released during the Vietnam war.

Personally, I was hoping Burton would have gone with his second choice to play Wonka, Christoper Walken. How cool/creepy would that have been?

"Easy, guys... I put my pants on just like the rest of you - one leg at a time. Except, once my pants are on, I make chocolate."

dougb222 03-21-05 03:33 PM

Nasal Beverage Discharge. Thanks a lot, Bill.

Cameron 03-21-05 04:05 PM

and also note....that the original movie was to help launch a candy line...that was another reason for the retitle of willy wonka and the chocolate factory....it is a remake.

and Giles has the sequel down pat...
