Since I'm pretty cautious in what I go see in the theater, rent or buy, there have been only 2 instances where I ALMOST turned off a film before the end:
Hoosiers - IMO, one of the most cliched movies ever made. I could have turned this off after 10 minutes and still be able to relate the entire film to someone.
The Glimmer Man - was given this by mistake at the video store. How I made it through this film is beyond me. Probably the toughest viewing experience I've ever had.

I usually fail to buy films I can't sit through. If I "blind buy", a term which I don't support, my blindness must be razor sharp. I always know what I'm getting into. My library is built for enjoyment, not neglect and wasting time.
I admit I had a hard time getting through Ladder 49. I made it though....but only because I served as a firefighter and felt obligated to take one for the team.

I didn't like Ladder 49 either. They market it like it would be for firefighters & their families or something, but most of the thing is so depressing it seems like it would just make them worry about all of the horrible things that could happen. I also didn't like Joaquin Phoenix in the average joe role. I love Joaquin, but he's quirky that's one of the cool things about him. He's not an everyman.

Napolean Dynamite - seems like everyone I know likes this one, I made it as far as the bike ramp jumping scene before I called it quits.
Royal Tenenbaums - I dont remember at what point I actually ejected from this one, but it seemed dry and I couldn't maintain interest in it. I know lots of people love this one, especially around here, but its not for me. I also despise Ben Stiller so that probably didnt help.
Punch Drunk Love - Also my worst blind buy. Actually, its the reason I dont blind buy anymore.....

Never. It did take me about a year to finish "The Rage-Carrie 2". I only purchased it because the girl in it went to my college, but I got about 5 minutes in and turned it off. When the Blockbuster $8 sale came around, I made myself watch it so I could sell it (for more than I paid).
I "blind-buy" all the time, but I do my research first. Some of the movies I blind-buy are better than others, but they're almost all worth seeing, and some of the movies I bought this way are now some of my favorites, so I'll never stop.

I really can't get myself to watch '2 days in the valley', I must have just bought it cause it's got a great cast, and cause Charlize Theron is topless in it.
I know I'm gonna get flamed but I bought the John Woo double pack with The Killer and Hard Boiled in it (a long time ago) and really couldn't see what the attraction was. Everything seemed staged and the squibs on the actors actually had sparks flying out of them. I ended up selling it. I do however enjoy a few other of John Woo's HK movies.

Moulin Rouge because it was indescribably annoying. I think I turned it off right around the time Ewan met John Leguizamo and the other weirdos in that apartment.
I also remember being too bored to finish a few David Mamet and John Sayles movies (Limbo, Lone Star, and Spanish Prisoner I think).

Was dragged kicking and screaming to it by my wife and sister-in-law. Sis-in-law had already seen it and loved it, but my Hugh Grant tolerance was limited. By the time we were half way through it, my wife was begging to leave, to which I gladly obliged.
Must admit...haven't minded him so much in more recent flicks (Notting Hill, About a Boy) but back then, the mugging was just insufferable.

I've only had 2 blind buys (This is Spinal Tap - because I loved Guffman/Best/Mighty and had to see some of the origins; and Bob le Flambeur - because I love 'The Good Thief' so the original had to be pretty solid). Other than that, I've really been able to restrain blind purchases for fear of pulling something bad, there's just too many other movies I want to be taking a chance on a blind buy.
