X-Files Conspiracy 1 Details

From tvshowsondvd.com

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=3077

Fox has announced the contents of the X-Files Conspiracy set they previously announced for May 17. This 3 disc set will contain 16 episodes from the first three seasons which involve the aliens, and the government conspiracy.

Disc 1: Pilot / Deep Throat / Fallen Angel / EBE.

Disc 2: The Erlenmeyer Flask / Little Green Men / Duane Barry / Ascension.

Disc 3: One Breath / Red Museum / Colony / End Game

Disc 4: Anasazi / The Blessing Way / Paper Clip

Extras Include:

* Deep Throat commentary with Chris Carter
* Little Green Men commentary with David Nutter
* Duane Barry commentary with Chris Carter
* End Game commentary with Frank Spotnitz
* The Blessing Way commentary with Bob Goodwin
* Thread of Mythology Part 1

The set will contain English, French and Spanish Dolby Surround tracks (with matching subtitles, and an Anamophic Widescreen (1.78:1) transfer. We expect this is an error in the listing on the Fox website, since these episodes were released in full frame (1.33:1) previously. The set will retail for $39.98 US, and $54.98 CAN. It appears Fox has plans to release at least one more "Conspiracy" set, since these episodes come from the first 3 seasons, and this set contains part 1 of a documentary. Artwork will be posted when it's available.

Looks good. The price is a tad steep still, but for I think it'll be worth it for the extras. Very few mytholgy episodes had commentary the first time around, too bad they didn't do it for all of them.

One episode that should have been included in this, Sleepless, isn't. That's kind of a shame.

Is this the same batch of episodes that they showed on F/X, oh about 6 years ago?

Are all the special features on this release included in the season sets? (Please say yes :))

The features are all new for this set. None of the commentaries on this are in the season sets and the doc is new. On the tvshowsondvd page it also lists them as 1:78 anamorphic but also states it's probably an error. It would be nice if it were true as they are full frame, and rightly so, on the season sets. They didn't start filming widescreen till season 5.

well considering this will be about $24.99 it might be worth picking up, since I was never able to swallow my pride and pay the high prices for teh season sets (except for season 1 when amazon had it for $31 with STL (RIP))

marty888 03-10-05 10:29 PM

In perfect X-Files ambiguity, looks like this 3-disc set will have 4 discs.

That's a bunch of bullsh*t. We all plunked down $75+ (or thereabouts) for a lot of these sets and now Fox is issuing these cut-rate theme sets with material not available on the much more expensive season sets. It would be different if the sets were low to begin with but these and others were higher than a kite for the longest time. I'm a very big commentary fan but I'll be damned if I get any of these

All the season sets are out now so they're looking for inventive ways to make more money off the popularity of the series. Adding 'special new material' and re-packaging, ways to get the fans to double dip. Pain in the arse, ain't it?

metaridley 03-11-05 03:05 AM

Yeah, I'd pick it up for the extras if it were a lot cheaper.

Are you crazy? I have all the sets and now i will buy this for sure for the new extras. As an X-files fan don't you want new stuff, you would have been happier with nothing new.

I hope they are widescreen or a new transfer, the newer seasons look so much better on the season sets. Seasons 1 to 4 look perfect in widescreen.

jmj713 03-11-05 08:40 AM

Why would you hope these are in widescreen? They were shot in 1.33:1.

Agreed, I am still hoping we will get another Friday the 13th set. As a fan I want extra materials, commentaries, cast interviews... anything to do with the series.

Big Worms 03-11-05 10:10 AM

I would much rather have them drop the price of the sets. Only tv show on dvd I want and they are expensive.

Shannon Nutt 03-11-05 10:20 AM

Slighty off-topic, but I just interviewed Chris Carter a few weeks ago, if anyone's interested.

I never fully got into the X-Files. A big part of the reason was because I wasn't there from the start, so by the time I tried to watch it the ongoing story was hard to pick up, and the casual viewer had a tough time understanding that some episodes advanced the ongoing narrative, while others had no connection to it.

That makes me interested in packages like this. If the main story can be boiled down to two or three sets with a total price of $60 or $90, that's a deal I can live with. If there are other individual episodes I then find out are "must see," I can rent those discs from Netflix.

See, I don't mind that so much for movies. Like the Star Trek films. Put out a good transfer that's bare bones that can be had for $10-15 and then a year or two later put out 2-disc SE's at reasonable prices. Fair enough. But $75 dollar season sets? They couldn't have requested these commentaries back in the day when the sets were originally assembled? Grrrrrrr.

island007 03-11-05 05:45 PM

I will double-dip.

The SRP is low enough that this should be in the $25-30 at DDD.

Michael Corvin 03-11-05 07:47 PM

I'm surprised at all of the people double dipping when they already have the sets sitting on their shelf. That seems a bit lazy to me. Not to mention it totally sends the wrong message to the movie industry.

Jackskeleton 03-11-05 08:22 PM

It does, but this isn't anything new to fox. Family Guy: Freak'n sweet collection. ;) Nothing new my friend.. Nothing new. ;)

Jray 03-11-05 09:45 PM

I'd much rather they just lowered the prices on the existing sets myself. I still haven't purchased past Season 2, even though it is my self-proclaimed favorite TV show ever, due to the prices. If they wanted to come out with all new special features and documentaries on a separate disc(s) (a la "Matrix Revisited") - GREAT, more power to 'em. I'd buy them. But this is kinda crappy, IMHO. I wonder if it means the season sets will soon go OOP?

Definitely. You own the season sets. You have the episodes. Why pay for them again? Yeahyeah, you aren't, you're paying for extras. It's only a $25-$30 double dip? It's going to take no time before they start releasing X-Files in some HD disc format after it's inception, so then there will be the need for the diehards to start dipping for 9 seasons all over again. Why dip in between? The best way to send a message to the industry is to let this stuff sit on the shelves gathering dust, pick 'em up in the Walmart $5.50 bin down the road.

I think this is one of the few cases where I prefer a "best-of" TV set to full seasons. I've watched x-files off and on over the years, and I think I'll really prefer this kind of set that just gets the basics. I would think a few of these plus the movie would get most of the mythology story right?

Star Trek Voyager is another I wouldn't mind picking choosing. There was an inordinate amount of stinkers on that show, but when it soared, it soared.

Awesome interview, This man made some great TV. I still can't believe after what x-files did for Fox they pulled the plug on him 3 times. Millennium was a great show, it need more time, and I loved Harsh Realm on DVD, I still want them to return and finish that up. I wish you has asked him more about that.
