Charlie Chan Vol 2 is now out. I spent last week watching it and was extremely impessed. The restorations are even better than the prior volume (presumably because the films are newer and were in better condition). I did a comparison between the commercial VHS and DVD of "CC at the Opera" and the VHS looks almost unwatchable in comparison. The overly dark and muddy transfer of the VHS has been brightened and cleared up considerably. The other films were never on VHS but there is a noticable improvement over showings that were on TV.
4 bonus documentaries are included. One on director Bruce Humberstone, two on actors Keye Luke and Layne Tom, and one is an inside look at the 4 films in the collection. I found all of them to be interesting and quite informative. Fox deserves credit for using historians and even family members that have a deep knowledge and respect of the topic being discussed as it adds more substance to the conversation.
Costco members can pick this up for $30.99 which is the best price I've seen.

Per DVD Empire, Charlie Chan vol 3 is being released 8/14. The rare Black Camel (Oland's earliest surviving Chan pitting him against Bela Lugosi) is being included as are the three other Olands not previously released: CC's Secret, CC on Broadway, and CC in Monte Carlo. As a bonus, the 1929 movie Behind That Curtain, with Chan as a minor character and featuring Boris Karloff is an early role is also being included.
Fox has also dropped the price of their box sets which means one can order this for $35 at this particular site.

Very impressed with Volume 3. I finished watching it today and it had some great extras.
First of all I was shocked at how good the Black Camel looked. The only previous version I had seen was a bad 16mm print that was so dark the movie was almost unwatchable. This new version looks just as good as the rest of the series Fox has released.
I also loved that they recreated one of the lost Chan films as a radio type drama using the original script and gave us the complete 1929 Behind That Curtain as another bonus feature. The short docs were good, but covered much of the same ground. I did enjoy the short piece on Henry Lee the modern day Chan.
All and all a fitting end to the great Warner Oland era of Chan films. I'm still looking forward to volume 4, but nothing can compare to Oland and Luke in the first series of films.
One of my dreams as a kid was to own the complete Warner Oland Chan films and the complete Rathbone Sherlock Holmes series. Some of the Chan films are lost forever, but I finally have gotten as close to that goal as I had ever hoped. I kind finally retire many VHS tapes from the grand old American Movie Classics, back when that name meant something.

^Are they coming in a set or individually?
Never mind... found it:
http://www.wbshop.com/product/charli...fType=&from=fn
It's a 3 film collection for $24.99. Hopefully this will be pressed initially...
Now I need a free shipping coupon or other sale/discount.

Yes. It's in the Charlie Chan Collection along with Docks of New Orleans, Shanghai Chest, and The Golden Eye. A pressed set from WB released almost three years ago.
