I posted this a while back, was my very first post, I think I accidentally posted it in covers/cases, anyway:
I bought a DVD for my sister, and she never opened it for about a year. She opened it and when we put it in to play there was a ton of skipping. I took the disc out and noticed a small scratch, but it was deep. The disc was "brand new" so is there anyway of getting a replacement? I know most of the skip things you spray then buff work, but that's for small scratches and blemishes.
The DVD was Grease, it's Paramount, anyone ever got a replacement from them?

I've used skip doctor on dvd's and games. I've recovered some pretty bad looking discs. Of course if the printed side is damaged or the play side is deeply gouged then it's a lost cause......

did you try using a dvd-rom drive to read it? because they can sometimes read discs better and therefore you can copy it to your hd and create a new dvd.

I need advice on this as well. I left my Criterion Armageddon disk in my backpack for a while accidentally and it developed so many scratches that many key scenes lock up and pixelate. I don't want to have to buy an new one!

If you do not care how the playing surface looks, than a disk doctor works great. It will eliminate these scratches by removing a very small portion of the top layer of the dvd. Your disk (playing surface) will then look like a spirograph. It will play, but will not look pristine after using this device. If the disk is very valuable or out of print, I suggest getting the dvd resurfaced. Here is a link to a company that provides this service.

It may cost a few dollars per dvd, but they will make the dvd look like new. A few dollars tradeoff on an out of print dvd is a good value to me in my opinion.
