FOX STREETS SPECIAL EDITIONS EARLY
Fire, Day After, Robot in seasonal sprint By Susanne Ault 3/3/2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MARCH 3 | A promotional perfect storm is rushing the release of collector's editions for Man On Fire, The Day After Tomorrow and I, Robot. Initial DVDs for the films already bowed from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in September, October and December, respectively. But special editions priced at $26.98 apiece are already planned to street May 24. Fox is quickening its step on the titles because of theatrical tie-in opportunities, seasonal benefits and pressures to beat the summer blockbuster crunch. The titles' collector sets should boost demand for July 1 theatrical The Fantastic Four from sister company 20th Century Fox Films. One movie voucher to be used toward the cost of admission to Fantastic Four in theaters will be bundled inside each special edition. All the male-starring--as in Denzel Washington, Dennis Quaid and Will Smith--DVDs also are being positioned as fitting gifts for Father's Day on June 19. Fox also is trying to corral some DVD business for itself before consumers are overwhelmed with the wave of summer theatrical releases. "Heavy DVD consumers who buy special editions are the people who see lots of [summer] movies," Fox executive VP marketing Peter Staddon noted. A TV, print and online advertising campaign, featuring the entire collector set group, will hit about two weeks before street date. Each special edition, which carry an April 27 prebook date, is packed with multiple commentaries, documentaries and deleted scenes. I am not upgrading, I am very happy with ths single editions. Good picture quality, dts what more do you want... |
Does anyone else feel like this article was written by Fox's PR dept? Like they're doing us a favor with these upgrades, when we know damn good and well overseas already got them. Here's an idea Fox, instead of reaming your customers on double dips, do it right the first time and if you want a promotional push, just re-release the same set with a lower MSRP and maybe a shiny new slipcover (a tangible, yet non-critical upgrade, IMHO). You'd engender a lot more goodwill that way.
And Peter Staddon used to post over at the HTF a lot, but I guess he decided the input of enthusiasts wasn't worth his time (or he was tired of being called on the carpet for shenanigans such as this, much like we scared Martin Blythe of Parmount from here) And I haven't picked up any of the three, I was waiting out I, Robot as soon as I heard of the 2 discers overseas. |

I did get burned on Heat though (sold it in advance assuming the SE would be a new transfer.) |

Sweet! I'm double dipping on all of them. They were all great flicks. So count me in. Especially excited on the earlier street dates.
