HOOP DREAMS Criterion DVD!!! EXTRAS REVEALED!!!
As most of you know, the 1994 classic documentary HOOP DREAMS is being released on DVD by Criterion in May. Here are the confirmed extras for this film:
- Letterbox presentation enhanced for widescreen televisions (1.85:1 anamorphic; Dolby Digital Stereo 2.0)
- Two audio commentaries: one with stars Arthur Agee and William Gates and one with filmmakers Peter Gilbert, Steve James, and Frederick Marx
- Segments from Siskel and Ebert tracking the acclaim for Hoop Dreams
- Original music video
- Theatrical trailers
- A booklet featuring a dedication to the Gates and Agee families written by Steve James; new essays by writer and cultural historian John Edgar Wideman, and Sports Illustrated senior writer Alexander Wolff; and Michael Wise’s Washington Post article “Looking Back at Broken Dreams”
- English subtitles for the deaf and hearing impaired
By looking at these extras, this is definitely worth picking up. What do you think?

Kind of anemic for Criterion extras, but what do I care? I have no interest in the title. I guess if it's in anamorphic widescreen and has the trailers, it's good to go...

The source is the official Criterion website:
www.criterionco.com
And I know that the extras seem limited, but as long as there are extras PERIOD, that's fine with me. And to have the commentaries with the filmmakers and main on-screen talent, that's not just good...that's GREAT.

Was it shown widescreen in theaters?

They seem really skimpy on the extras. I do love the fact that Agee and gates are doing an audio commentary, but no new interviews? I think its a sin that Gene Pingatore(coach) is not on here doing some new interviews and talking about the players. I also would love some interviews with some actual NBA players discussing what the film meant to them, and discussing the similarities and ifferences in their own lives growing up. Overall decent. Again, while this is a documentary piece, no 5.1 is still ridiculous!!!!

There were a few parts in the film(during the court sequences) where a 5.1 audio would have been nice. Again, I'm not going to complain about it, its just something that would been nice.

Only $29.95 MSRP. Even if this wasn't Criterion I'd still pick it up. It's a shame they couldn't release it in March to tie with College B-ball. But I guess the NBA playoffs will be in May.
