M - Criterion Collection DVD help needed.

I'm not sure if this belongs in this forum, or the inserts forum, so if it needs to be moved, I apologize. I had a question, being a new collector of the Criterion Collection DVDs. I looked on Ebay and Amazon and couldn't figure out the answer, so I'm sure somoene here will be able to set me straight.

I found "M" at a DVD store, used. It's a double disc edition, the 2004 release. It didn't have a cardboard cover, or paper slipcase or anything though. Should it have one? Also, is the first edition of this film going to have anything that the 2004 release doesn't?

I'm pretty ignorant about the CC DVDs, hoping to learn more about them as I collect. I'd appreciate any help.

Mine's just in a regular DVD case, albeit a double unit. I bought it new from Amazon several months ago.

Not all of the Criterion DVDs have ultra special packaging. Of the CC DVDs I own, Mon Oncle, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Vanishing, and The Seventh Seal are packaged pretty much like any other DVD. Only Rules of the Game has a fancy slipcover and all that.

Hope this helps.

Hopefully it came with an insert because all Criterions have inserts.

has a very nice book actually...and the criterion 2004 catalog...

the new one is so much better than the old....better transfer....features....good stuff

There is a comparison between the two Criterion editions at DVD Beaver. The 2-disc set sports a gorgeous transfer of the restored elements. The initial release was barebones; the newer release is loaded with goodies.

Stay with the 2-disc re-release from Criterion.

Criterion's 2-disc rerelease of Lang's M does not come in a cardboard cover or slipcase or anything besides the standard double-sized case.

The single-disc first edition is completely bare of bonus features and the A/V quality is not even close to what you find in the new rerelease.

Thanks so much, for the help, to everyone. Yep, mine came in the double wide disc case, with a pretty lengthy insert/book about the film, and a catalouge for all of the other CC DVDs currently produced, so it looks like I did pretty well for $15.

I appreciate the quick help.

I have two more questions..

1) Is there a website that contains information, about which Criterions come with slipcases, boxes, etc? Criterionco.com didn't help me any, and neither did trying to look at photos on Ebay or Amazon.

2) I ask this, because I saw Armageddon used, for $11, and it didn't have a box or slipcase, only the doublewide case, with a booklet inside. Was it missing the box? Some on Ebay appeared to be in boxes, so I'm not sure if I should pick it up tomorrow or not.

I don't think very many Criterions have slipcases. Armageddon doesn't have one.

Djtoell, thanks for the reply. I wish there was a site that listed the info, then I wouldn't have to be such a pest. I have a question about one last one.

Diabolique. Slipcase? I used to see this new in a local store, but it's been gone for almost a year and the copies I've been seeing don't have anything over the DVD case. For some reason, the new copy always stuck out in my mind as being different from most of them. Not sure if it was just the fact it was a CC, or if it had a slipcase.

So someone please set me straight on this one, and I should be done.
