Our good friend David Bianculli at the New York Daily News got an exciting scoop on the fifth season of The Sopranos. With the sixth and final season of The Sopranos not airing until 2006, and the release of the fourth season to DVD way back in 2003, HBO has decided to step up the release of The Sopranos - Season 5. Instead of releasing it just before the start of season 6, they've instead set June 7th as the new street date (just in time for Father's Day). That is much sooner than the "fourth quarter, 2005" plans HBO revealed to Video Business last Fall.

Today's Daily News article mentions the planned extras for this release, too! Here's a quote:

Four directors will provide commentary for the fifth-season box, including Mike Figgis and "Sopranos" fifth season recurring guest star Steve Buscemi.

Bada-bing! About time!

Can't wait to see how they make a 6 season deluxe collector's edition.

Maybe they'll start by actually putting some extras on the sets.

With a MSRP as high as the Sopranos discs are, they could do a little more than that, especially since I'm sure there are plenty of interesting stories and information that could be told.

Fair enough, but I bet if they threw on some cast and crew biographies, tv spots, and maybe some phoney-baloney "behind-the-scenes" documentaries, then you'd probably be pleased. Maybe some interactive menus, too.

Seriously though, my favorite Sopranos extra, if you can call it that, is the English subtitles on Season Four. I hope Season Five continues the trend.

Want to bet that, when S6 is done and out on DVD, then HBO goes and does something like this :(

Nah, I'd probably not watch any of that, but I would like to see cast and crew interviews or an in depth documentary about the show and its creation, inspiration, acting, all that stuff.

Did Bogdanovich direct an episode, or is he just on there because he's the doctor's doctor? I know Buscemi has directed episodes in previous seasons, so I figure he did at least one here too.

These sets are simply WAY too much money. I am glad I am not a Sopranos fan enough to own the sets, even at $80 (which is the lowest anyone can sell it for), thats $6.15 an episode for the 13 episodes. Compare that to any other TV set generally going for a maximum of lets say $50 at mostly 24 episodes thats $2 an episode. Some sets are just too much.

HBO makes movie quality television shows, and their shows are the best on TV if you ask me. Their actors get paid a lot, and it costs a lot of money to produce these things. The Sopranos being the cream of the crop, I have no problem paying the money for this show. Don't get me wrong, it would be really nice if it was cheaper, but I can understand why they charge so much.

He directed "Sentimental Education". Also, Mike Figgis directed "Cold Cuts".

All indications are that HBO is into "prestige" pricing, as noted by the rather high MAP.

Production costs probably aren't a much of a factor in the pricing; if HBO was losing money on the series they wouldn't be making it. And they recently sold the syndication rights to A&E for $2.5 million per episode.

The Sopranos is also one of the top-selling television DVD titles, so there really isn't much of a reason for HBO to sell the season sets for less.

I'm just hoping that they take a little of the filthy Sopranos lucre and throw it Carnivale's way to keep that show afloat until the story is finished.
