Lion King 1, 1 1/2, and 2 now OOP?

I heard that all 3 have been put back in the Disney vault recently. Is this true?

Dai 02-16-05 12:49 AM

Yes, I think the date was Jan 31, 2005

Cameron 02-16-05 01:06 AM

get em before they are gone....some companies send them back...although you can ususally pick them up for at least a month or two pretty common

Big Worms 02-16-05 08:50 AM

Yes - back to the vault. OOP ??? Tower Records is good about putting in info about when (the date of) OOP, but they do not list any OOP date for Lion King ???

I have still seen them at Suncoast and Fry's recently had the trilogy box set of 1, 1 1/2 and 2 on sale on their website and maybe in-store as well. Many online sites still have them for sale, even at discounted prices. Suncoast actually had them on sale at 2/$32 earlier in January, I believe - that is when I picked mine up.

Picked up the Trilogy Set for $39.99 at BJ's.

It is marketing. It always keep people wanting your product. When you have the vast library that Disney does, you can afford to release slowly. Take Aladdin. You start by using commercials....radio ads, tv, internet...you then crank up a new video of classic song like a whole new world by a hot new artist "Jessica Simpson" on disney channel. You do special promos at the theme parks celebrating the movie... You run the movie on ABC's wonderful world of disney the week before it comes out, so all the kids who just saw it are asking mom and dad for it...then when they get their new dvd you have trailers for the sequels available a little later....also you will find a new batch of toys at the disney store, and clothing all over....sell, sell, sell

fast forward a year, and you start promtoting, last time to own for seven years. with new commercials...you then start fresh with a new title....

it works....and the people who miss the boat end up paying double MSRP on ebay for it....people always want what they can't have....disney has embraced this...and made alot of cash

good post Cameron, 100% true too.

kornboy 03-01-05 08:45 PM

should we start stocking up on them now, would it be a good investment?

Cameron 03-01-05 08:57 PM

i doubt it...at least not to the extent that jungle book or toy story have been. Alot more people owned dvd players when this one was released...It sold a lot more copies...so the used market will be flooded. However, if you have a sealed copy, I doubt you could lose much money if you buy it for under 18 bucks.

won't buy you a new boat, or a bling bling mansion...but you might be able to afford supersize and an apple pie...

The big problem is finding it right now at a cheap price. 19.99 seems to be the cheapest.

Not to mention, I don't think that as big a fuss was made when those two were put back in the vault. I remember some commercials when Snow White went back in, but Disney assaulted the airwaves with "get it before it's gone" commercials for the 3 Lion King films.

Now I'm kind of wishing I hadn't sold my Lion King gift set...might be worth more in the future.

Libby 03-01-05 10:06 PM

what order do the movies go in? I can never remember.

i do think if anything holds its value it will be the giftset...its a nice set...cool to look at, glad i have one.

Drexl 03-02-05 01:27 AM

The HD version is probably only five years away.

Dabaomb 03-02-05 02:49 AM

ecost.com has the Lion King Trilogy for $34.99 + $3.95 Handling Fee = $38.94

It's $39.99 but $34.99 when you add it to your cart.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just found a Lion King Platinum at a store. It was the last one there, and it didn't have the slip case.
Now, they also have the Lion King Giftset (2 left), should I get it instead or in addition to the Platinum?
As far as I can tell, the only thing extra in the giftset is the book and character drawings? Is it worth $20 more?
And, they had a lot of the Lion King 1 1/2. I think I'll go back and get that also.

eau 10-04-05 06:25 PM

I believe there was a Lion King trilogy boxset (LK, LK 1/2, LK 2) that came out just before OOP. It might be a cheaper way if they still have it.

As for the giftset, it has the platinum edition plus a book, drawing and a collector's box. I would say get it if you already have the giftsets of other platinum series - Aladdin and Cinderella, so that they will look nice on the shelf.

Cameron 10-07-05 01:52 AM

i have the giftsets and love them...pay the 20

DVDFreaker 10-07-05 02:55 AM
