Is this a good version of Eraserhead on DVD?

I really want Eraserhead on DVD and I really don't want to join DL.com and pay 39.99 for it.

So I was wondering if you guys, if any of you have it, could tell me about this Korean import DVD.

Is it going to play on my R1 player?

How is the picture?

Can you remove the subtitles?

Is the disc double-sided?

The reason I wouldn't buy that version is because it's says "full screen". The DL.com version is anamorphic widescreen (and the transfer is really, really good).

you don't have to join the site in order to order things from the store.

yes, from everything I have read about the Korean disc, you probably should avoid it at all costs....the picture is supposedly not that great and it is not original aspect ratio.

Besides the release on the DL site, the only other Eraserhead dvd that I have read reasonable things about is the R2 disc.

The DL.com disc does have an amazing picture, so if you really want Eraserhead on dvd....best to just suck it up and get it from there. Unfortunately the shipping prices totally suck, but they aren't so bad if you are getting more than one item.

The DL.com site version is well worth the price. Pick it up.

kms_md 02-13-05 04:01 PM

agreed. pick up the dl.com site version.

Jason Bovberg 02-13-05 04:23 PM

Yep, settle for no other version than the official Lynch-supervised version...

I'm still using my japanese laserdisc.

i say hit the dollar menu for a week and spend the extra cash on the DL.com version

I also agree the DL edition is well worth the price. He personally over saw the transfer and the making of the DVD, and you are not going to find a better copy.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I really appreciate it!

I've been tempted to get the DL.com disc for a long time now. I've never seen the movie and can't see spending that kind of cash blind. I've liked all his other movies but I don't know if I'd like this one. Why hasn't he made the movie available elswhere? He's so weird.

meritocracy 02-13-05 07:45 PM

Nothing weird about it at all. It's Lynch's baby and he owns the rights to it. He personally paid for and oversaw the restoration of the film and it's readily available for those who'd care to purchase it. The transfer is immaculate, the soundtrack is pitch perfect, and the packaging is to die for. You don't want to buy it blind, fine, rent the damn thing on vhs from Blockbuster. Then you can easily determine if you'd care to purchase it.

Hammer99 02-13-05 10:43 PM

You can always rent the DL.com disc from Greencine.

caligulathegod 02-13-05 10:50 PM

The reason he hasn't made it available elsewhere is that being that he owns it, it helps to support the davidlynch.com site.

It's a shame they couldn't do the PCM soundtrack as promised. Great disc, though. One of the few (after the laserdisc days of high priced SEs) that I didn't mind paying for.

yeah, and if you order from dl.com, it'll come packaged in a cool-looking lynch-designed shipping box resembling a shoebox.

well at one time, he was in negotiations to release Eraserhead through Criterion....but those plans fell through so he just decided to do the dvd himself.
