Can we have an official HD-DVD / BL release thread?

I've seen some great info on many different threads regarding Blue Laser and HD-DVD. I'm thinking possibly two threads one on release dates for HD-DVDs and one for Blue Laser DVDs. I'd also love to see some threads on the hardware - perhaps going to the other section of this forum for an official HD-DVD hardware thread and an official Blue Laser hardware thread.

I'm sure there are those who are saying it isn't available yet but seriously I doubt there is anyone who is dedicated enough to be a member of this forum who isn't interested in the new formats coming out.

There are certainly strong arguments about which format is better but clearly the truth is that both have much greater potential than regular DVDs.

I'd like to see more info on the potential codecs they are considering. I thought they were poetentially replacing MPEG2 as the standard but I'm still seeing it being discussed so I'm guessing from the posters out there that this hasn't been decided yet?

It's not that I don't care or have no interest. I'm frankly just sick of hearing about it and won't get my jock in a twist until it moves even closer. My enjoyment and dedication right now is with my current library, which will not die because of whatever format comes slamming in. Maybe you should just start a whole new forum. Hell, even I would become a member...maybe in 2007 or 2008.

I have no desire to jump on the next format and will not until a few years or more go by, more titles are released and hardware prices drop. Much will change in those few years so I'll just wait.

I may be the only one who feels this way...but so be it.

Maybe it would be good to have an HD forum. All the HD-DVD, TV threads could be housed there and keep the DVDTalk forum cleaner, and more focused.

DVD's are here and they are wonderful...ENJOY THEM TO THE FULLEST!!!!....stop lamenting on the future!

I understand your apparent concern but I think to a degree it is people like the readers of this forum who get the ball going. I think it is also thanks to people like us that DIVX didn't become a popular DVD format at Circuit City. I've been seeing the new HD formats for the past 3 years at CES. I'm hoping this year that not only is a good amount of hardware and titles supplied but it doesn't take a year to see some supply like our current DVD standard did. I remember going to the store and seeing about 20 titles on the rack for the first few months thinking it was almost laughable.

If these threads bother you, then don't read them -ohbfrank-

I don't care where these HD-DVD threads are, but I'm interested in reading them.

I do understand your original question and although I may not be ready....I understand many are. The best thing then is to just have a stickey thread so we don't have to see an HD thread squeezed in between the latest current dvd threads. This would make everyone happy and I think this is what you are asking for, for the most part. Sorry that I was straying off track a little.:D

It's not so much that I'm concerned...I'm just not ready. There are way too many outstanding releases flooding the shelves and this will continue for a while. based on my "films still not on dvd" list....I count over 200 I still need to complete my library. Many of these are years and years away from seeing another format release and it's because they are so obscure and un-popular....so my focus remains in the present day. Lets just say it's best for me to sit the war out for a bit and see what happens...because nobody is really sure. And you're right. If I wanted to gain information on the war that is about to begin...it's the members here at DVDTalk that I would trust the most. I'ts been that way for me for nearly 3 years.

Let the war commence! I'll just be the coward and sit back from the front lines about 1000 yards.-wink-

Yeah, the sticky might work, but with the shear number of threads, I think that one thread would not clear the forum enough. An HD forum is going to be a must soon, as the players will be rolling out in less than a year. Hard facts on releases, etc will be flooding in soon as we already have tenative release list and possible pricing threads. The number of HD compared to DVD arguments alone must be three or four threads.

I would imagine the moderators will create separate HD-DVD/Blu Ray threads once these discs actually hit the market.

can't help it...when they all litter the regular DVD forums, there is no avoiding it. they shouldn't be in "DVD Talk" because they are not DVD'S!!!

nightmaster 02-12-05 06:31 PM

I don't necessarily see that there should be a new forum, but certainly a new forum area? HD talk and HD-DVD talk seems reasonable to me as a new forum area or areas. Talking about HD-DVDs is not talking about DVDs. In fact, alot of the threads that have been active have been ones that denigate the current DVD format, trash it, tell fellow DVD'ers how blind and foolish they are to still be buying DVDs......how much sense does it make to see new threads daily on DVD talk that trash the DVD format? I came to this forum because I like DVDs and the format, not because I want to tell people how stupid they are for liking and buying them.

Right. I love film and the proper presentation of it, as much as the next guy. HD-DVD may be it and when it is....I'll be involved. It is something to discuss....but not here. It would also be better in it's own forum so that the people who are just now, thats right, just now getting into dvd, won't come to this forum and be confused. It does happen.

Can we have an official Playstation 3 / X-box 2 thread? C'mon people get on this!!

TomOpus 02-12-05 07:53 PM

I wouldn't mind seeing a HD forum... similar to the Political and the Covers, Cases and Inserts Forums

Centurion 02-13-05 12:44 AM

An HD-DVD/Blu-Ray forum is inevitable. I think most are just saying that it's a little premature to be creating one.

Yeah? If it's premature then howcome we're seeing new HD threads several times every week? Those who are anxiously awaiting HD don't think it's premature to start discussing it. Who here is saying it's premature to accomodate them? Certainly not me.

Hamburger3 02-13-05 05:59 AM

I am. Its far too early as the hardware and discs are a year off.

We see the threads because some people are too impatient and should learn to wait until the appropriate time.

When the new area is open then you can talk about other specialist formats that may or may not take off in the next 5 years.

Kris81 02-13-05 06:12 AM

Having these threads here is as valid as people telling us which TV shows they are watching, or which sporting events they're watching in the "What are you watching this week?" thread

Hamburger3 02-13-05 06:43 AM

Not really. Tv shows are on now. Not in 1 years time.

Hardly the same.

And they are not dvd's and so have no place in this forum.

So who determines when the right time to discuss something is? What a ridiculous statement. HD is coming and will succeed DVD. It will take a few years though. We can't possibly wait until it is mainstream to start discussing it. It is thanks to sites like this one that pounded DVD when it was a niche product that brought it to the mainstream.

This is the only DVD forum I visit, and I do think news/discussion of new formats is important so that we can make informed decisions.

I would like to see a sub forum for HD talk, mostly to keep the repetition down. We see several threads that basically echo the same themes. Perhaps even as suggested a stickied "Official" HD thread would work to keep all that talk there.

A few weeks, or so, ago I almost started a thread like this over in Feedback when there were 7 HD threads on page 1. A little overkill IMO but shows an interest.

I would be curious to know what plans the site has once it looks necessary to either have a sticky or it's own subforum.

So did I. It was the same week the release dates were announced. I don't care about the variety, just repeating the same topic/discussion.

speedyray 02-13-05 10:41 AM

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=5800216

I started an official feedback thread asking for a solution to HD in DVD Talk forum problem. Basically I ask for a new forum. If you don't mind, please express your opinion there so maybe we can get the ball rolling a little sooner than release date for the HD forums.

Let me say again that I like the HD threads, but they deserve their own home, so that DVD Talk is still about DVD.

Kris81 02-13-05 11:50 AM

HD forum has as much use on a dvd site as a sports forum, a general forum & a book forum..

u get the picture ;) LOL

and p.s talking about hd bl is like talking about "who's going to win the superbowl" at the beginning of the season!
