War of the Worlds (1953 version): Special Collector's Edition - expected Nov '05

With the big remake coming and the fact that the current DVD will have been out for 6 years in a few months, do you think Paramount might release a SCE of the original War of the Worlds? The current DVD is OK, but no real features. I want a nice Documentary (maybe they can explain the reasoning behind the Crappy TV series sequel) and if at all possible the Orsen Welles Radio Broadcast of War of the Worlds, that would be the ultimate extra to me.

Hey, I liked the '80s TV series. The first season was cool, the 2nd and I think the 3rd, lost sight of where it originally intended to go.

There were only 2 seasons to the War of the Worlds series.

Man, the Welles broadcast WOULD be the ultimate extra. I've never heard it.

Another great extra would be the 1975 TV movie The Night That Panicked America :

I've been holding off on the current War of the Worlds DVD since I read that the picture quality is just passable. My LaserDisc has a pretty good picture, and since the movie was shot in 1.37:1 it is perfectly fine for the time being.

I would love a Special Edition DVD, though. The 1938 radio broadcast along with a "making of" feature would be nice.

The 1953 War of the Worlds is one of my all time favorite movies.

Yes,the laserdisc also has the original stereo soundtrack; the DVD is mono.

That Welles broadcast CD is pretty easy to get; I think I paid $1 for mine...

I had the laserdisc and the picture & color looked fantastic.
I held off on the dvd because I read that the transfer wasn't that good.

new update for you

from the digital bits rumor mill

you can expect a new collector's edition of the classic War of the Worlds this summer as well (timed to take advantage of the hype over Steven Spielberg's forthcoming remake).

july 12th is still the date i have...i am sure it will be right before the movie hits

I hope they focus on the audio/video too... and not just add some extras. The current DVD is very lackluster in both respects, especially when compared to the CAV laserdisc from a few years earlier. That edition had better video and an excellent stereo soundtrack.

I read in another post that the Stereo track on the LD is not the film's original audio but a remix by Chace productions using a composite track. I think there's some doubt as to whether it was ever released in stereo or if the original stems even survive.

Agreed, the LD looks and sounds terrific. The Orson Welles broadcast of War of the Worlds should be public domain so I think it is a no-brainer to include it in any dvd.

Bernie Maxwell of TDB is reporting the 6/14 release of "The War of the Worlds" (1953) has been delayed indefinitely.

That sucks.

I gave away my copy of the current DVD in anticipation of this SCE. Looks like I got burned again
