First Austin Powers incorrectly framed?
 

Why is my listing on www.dvdaficionado.com telling me Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery - New Line Platinum Series (Incorrectly Framed Transfer) (1997)?

Has it ever been corrected?

I tried searching on this, but came up with nothing.

The film was shot in Super35 and the DVD is at 2:1 ratio ('according to the director' is what the DVD package says), wheras the theatrical presentation was 2.35:1, that might be the difference.

Region 2 has it in 2.35:1 and is a slightly different cut IIRC.

Funny that this has come up, as I just watched this movie last night, and noticed it was incorrectly framed.

R4 SE is in OAR of 2.35:1 and includes deleted scenes as part of the main feature, in addition it has more extras than the European and Canadian releases.
The R1 has additional extras slightly different to the R4, however it has been opened up to 1.90:1 and deleted scenes are presented seperatly on the disc and have not been re-edited into the film like the R2 and R4 releases (and also lacks the Christian Slater scenes completely).

Specifically, the back of the DVD case reads: WIDESCREEN VERSION Presented in a "letterboxed" widescreen aspect ratio of 2:1 as specified by the director.

Calling the framing of "Austin Powers" "incorrect" implies there was a mistake made. That is not the case here. Jay Roach deliberately chose to open up the framing of the film for DVD. There is nothing to correct.

While I prefer OAR, I am also an advocate of following the wishes of a film's director. Sometimes those two preferences come into conflict, as they do here. When that happens, in my opinion the director wins out.

Well, at least the framing allows us to see Alotta Fagina's nipple in the hot tub. :D Based on how the PAL frames look at that page above, it is likely cut off at the bottom of the screen on those versions.

The R1 version seems to have better picture quality. It's unfortunate that it doesn't have the deleted scenes added in tho.
