What is a Polygram Dvd Case?

I was looking at the Dead Man Walking dvd and it said it had a Polygram Case. Anyone know what it is?

It's essentially the DVD equivalent of a traditional CD jewel case. It's roughly the same dimensions as a traditional DVD keepcase, but it's much thinner. Like a CD jewel box, it's made of hard (brittle), clear plastic. It closes more tightly than a CD jewel case, though. The hub is like that of a CD jewel case. In fact, they are sometimes referred to as a Super Jewel Case.

Drop it on a hard surface, and it's likely to break easily--or, at least, crack--due to its weight and material. That and PolyGram's demise are why they never caught on. They are unwieldy.

I hate these stupid cases

i don't think that is the "Polygram" dvd case. my original release of Usual Suspects came in this weird case that opened by sliding out the (black colored) tray from the bottom of a clear acrylic case, and you would then have to pull the disc out manually since the tray doesn't come out all the way. it was prone to scratching the disc, and a horrible design. glad they got rid of them.

Darmok, what I have posted is a PolyGram DVD case, but you're also right. The one you describe was used on a handful of PolyGram releases in the U.S., while the one I show apparently was used mostly in R2 and sporadically in the U.S. by a variety of early-DVD distributors, including PolyGram.

As far as which one feral125 will get, it probably is likely to be the slide-out version that Darmok describes. Dead Man Walking was one of about six Poly-distributed titles that used the slide-out case before that design was quickly abandoned.

It's worth noting that if you're buying a DVD with a Poly case--of either design--it's an old, old copy, one of the first released.

That case (Super Jewel Case) above isn't the original North American cases used by PolyGram. They did use SJCs in Europe.

In Canada/USA the case was like a mixture of a SJC and a slipcase. It was horrible.

Isn't that the kind of case they send you those stupid AOL discs in now?

-Hate them!?

I love this Cases! They are better than any Plastic Amaray DVD Case. I collect them when I get them in the AOL package. I been trying to buy them but are expensive.

Verbatim also sells DVD blank media packed in these cases.
