Single disc for me. Thanks for re-affirming what I though OP.

Anyone think that even though Universal is trying to milk the consumer for all their worth, they'll try and squeeze another edition of this film onto DVD before the year's over? If it does anything at the Oscars, I can't see them not taking advantage of it and putting together yet another edition.

Dalvin 01-30-05 01:49 PM

It willdefinetly be double dipped, the question is when not if.

dantes 01-30-05 02:05 PM

Anyway, I have bought it and it's on its way now. But some early packaging photos would have been nice :)

Bleddyn Williams 01-30-05 02:28 PM

Like Fox, Universal at some point decided that a two-disc set for $30 was way too much value for them to give away. Fox has so far given us a $30 1-disc set on numerous titles when 2-disc versions are available abroad. Who knows what pricing the 2-discers will have when they finally show up domestically? Two sets that did stay as 2-disc items are Master & Commander and I Heart Huckabees - both 2-discs for $40!!!

I don't know about the Huckabees, but M&C managed to hide its high $40 retail with nice packaging. This also allowed Fox to sell a "bare bones" 1-disc for a full $30!

Same strategy with Ray - the one disc is a full $30 retail and the 2-disc an outrageous $45. A nice cover and a picture book try to disguise the fact that a year or so ago you could reasonably expect the 2 discs in an amaray case for $30.

On Red Dragon - abroad you could get a 2-disc set with the feature with DTS and bonuses on disc 2. Over here, the extras were spread over disc 1 & 2, losing the DTS so Universal could have a 1-discer with extras and simply bung the rest on the overpriced "director's edition."

These companies have realised that they have been too "generous" with us, and these various configurations and price points are them figuring out how to take it back.

Dalvin 01-30-05 03:17 PM

I am a little confused. Is the whole movie not on one disc? Do I actually have to flip the disc over to watch the rest of the movie( a la "Schindler's List) if so, you can forget about me picking this one up.

slop101 01-30-05 03:52 PM

No no - the whole movie is on one side, with the extras on the other side, and the extras exclusive to the LE are on another single-sided disc.

Does anyone esle find it interesting, that this close to release date, there are still no reviews of this dvd?
Which just perpetuates my theory of Universal's screw job.

Al Padrino 01-30-05 04:02 PM

Are you talking about reviews around here or just in general?

Dalvin 01-30-05 04:24 PM

I think he means in general for this version.

Al Padrino 01-30-05 05:31 PM

Well, whether it's good or not has little to do with the lack of reviews we've seen. I think once it's actually out, we'll see more reviews.

reggio@pacific. 01-31-05 10:09 AM

my LE order is on its way.. havent read any reviews... just seen this promo pix for the LE..

http://img15.exs.cx/img15/8189/d6-ray2.jpg

just hope the packaging is good.. otherwise, i will feel ripped off..

slop101 01-31-05 11:19 AM

The picture above, on the right isn't accurate.

There's one disc on the inside front cover (not two on top of each other as pictured), and the second disc is inside the back cover - otherwise, it's the same, and really not that impressive when compared to stuff like Short Cuts, or Battle of Algiers from Criterion. That "booklet" is pretty useless.

kms_md 01-31-05 11:26 AM

over at HTF there is some talk concerning the extended scenes.

fyi.

reggio@pacific. 01-31-05 11:42 AM

oh.. just read the reviews.. and i feel so sorry now for getting the LE..

hmp... need to return the set when it arrives.. 10,000 miles away from home..

thanks for the heads up btw..

Big Worms 01-31-05 12:24 PM

Ok...I am starting to loose any desires to get this LE version. Now the only reason I like it is becuase of the cover art. I think it is far better than the non LE. But not worth it for an extra 16 bucks.

Apparantly there's an extended version of the movie on this dvd, but I haven't checked it out yet. The menues say that it branches on it's own, but an icon still appears on the screen when it's about to go into an extended scene (which sounds kinda lame - if it does it on it's own, why would there have to be an icon), though being impatient, I didn't have time to sit through the movie and wait for an extended scene to see how the dvd incorporated it in - maybe over the weekend.

dont tell me he dies at the end ;)

What single disc version?

I just rented RAY at Blockbuster and it has 2 Discs!

Dalvin 02-01-05 08:13 PM

I got the LE version and I'm happy with it. I love the packaging. It's very nicely done.

I suspect this is another case of single-sided discs being manufactured specifically for the rental market. While B&M BBV may supply both discs as one rental, the mail-order services don't.

is the picture quality really as poor as the IGN review suggests..? i was thinking about buying this one, but i think i'll pass if they messed up the video quality that badly. i know IGN has been way off the mark before though, so i thought i'd ask if it's really as bad as they suggest, or if they're just being overly critical.

by the way, in regards to the Limited Edition.. why didn't they make the LE come with the soundtrack CD instead? those LE extras hardly sounds worth the extra price, but if it had come with the CD i would probably have been far more interested to get it.

eXcentris 02-01-05 09:27 PM

I don't want to rub it in (ok just a little :)) but here's what I got as a review copy: A black box with a white ribbon. Inside were the 2 disc LE, a Ray Charles CD, an 8 1/2 x 11 softcover photo book and a T-shirt.

Willh51 02-01-05 10:14 PM

I wouldn't worry about the picture, dvdauthority gave it 4.5/5 and dvdtalk (actually from currentfilm I think) gave it 4/5. It's probably alright. Sometimes IGN really knocks down transfers that are just "average."

Well I lied. I really like the look of this Limited Edition, but after this thread and another one, I could not justify the extra $16 for it.

animatedude 02-05-05 12:40 AM

god i knew it!...it's Out Of Stock in amazon.com....i think it's quite obvious now that the limited edition is VERY LIMITED.

SlingshotBandit 02-05-05 04:33 AM

That'd be funny if suddenly everyone had to have it because it couldn't be found anywhere. The only way I'd ever get it is if I could find it for a real good price (we're talking around the price of the regular edition).
