Back to the Future rerelease

I see BTTF trilogy is being repriced 1/25. Are these the same misframed versions previously released? I never picked it up at $40, I would at ~$20 if they are fixed.
Thanks

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=2734

This past Christmas Day (and the day after), I posted news about various plans from Universal Studios Home Video for 2005 TV-on-DVD releases. I mentioned titles like Kojak, Leave It To Beaver, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and 2nd-season sets for Las Vegas, Knight Rider, The A-Team, The Munsters, Magnum P.I., and Columbo. Well, the source of that information wasn't limited to TV-DVDs, you should know: film plans were also mentioned along the way. Special editions apparently are in the works for '05 release of classic films like The Sting, Coal Miner's Daughter, The Jerk, and others, including - yes! - Back To The Future.

There was no mention, by the way, as to whether this will be a separate release of just the first movie, or if it is once again the entire trilogy packed together in one box. I'm afraid I don't know anything more than just the words "Back to the Future (special edition)", written exactly that way. So please don't write asking me for more info about this new film release...I have none! It simply looks like they want to take advantage of the 20th anniversary of the first film's release and do something special with it on DVD. There's no way to know yet if it's one film in there, or all three.

Sweet. Do I smell an anamorphic release of the Sting.. finally?

As for BTTF, who cares if they are still only available together? $20 for all three is a steal.

It's been 20 years since BTTF came out?!? I saw it in the theater, several times.

Wow, I'm going to try and stop thinking about that now.

How is the packaging on this? I read somewhere the discs came one on top of another, but that could be wrong.

The "new" release will not look any better. These transfers, for their age, look about as good as they can.

I never picked this up ONLY because I knew of the mis-framing problem. Now at this price I get the corrected version at an even better price.

So the ones with the new sticker posted above are for sure the corrected ones?

Well if you're going to spend $20 now to buy this trilogy, you'd be better off buying the full screen version as it was open matte I guess.

How would it be better? Better as in the picture fills the screen?

Please shoot me if i'm wrong, but BTTF was intended for 1.85:1. I believe one gains more at the top and bottom of the frame, but loses a significant amount off the sides as a result.

POW! So, open matte simply removes the bars and reveals what was underneath them in filming. You don't lose any picture from the sides in an open matte, you only gain picture (top and bottom). THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER is that the film was NOT intended to be shown open matte and the director's artistic vision was in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. That was how it was shown in theaters and how the special effects shots were framed. SO, as is repeated ad nauseum on this forum, "It's not about MORE image, it's about the CORRECT image." Buy widescreen!

This does not go for special effects shots which were hard matted in widescreen, so you ARE missing the sides for these in a full screen version while gaining nothing on the top and bottom.

I'm confused, I've heard many and many people say the correct version was the open matte version. In fact, Zemeckis has also admitted himself that the full frame open matte version of the film is what he intended the audience to see so, where do you get that the widescreen was the correct version? The director himself says so otherwise.

EDIT: Nevermind :P

I bought this re-release last night at B*st Buy. They only had five Widescreen and two Fullscreen copies. Apparently the stocking guys decided that only one copy would be placed on "the floor" at a time. The first copy was Fullscreen! After searching and finding nothing, I spotted the poor guy who had grabbed the FS copy. I asked him if he saw any other copies and a salesperson who was listening told me that they had plenty in back. I was happy. BTW, I told the FS guy that he was holding a FS copy and he was quite surprised and unhappy. When the salesperson returned with the store's supply, I grabbed a WS copy, my new friend grabbed a WS copy and gave the FS back. Furthermore, another customer who witnessed this scene jumped in and asked for a Widescreen copy.

It appears this re-release isn't being stocked that well right now and the corrected copies are moving quickly. I checked T*rget and Bord*rs - corrected versions already sold. They only had the old red sticker copies, which were in pretty bad shape!

I seem to remember that, when this title first came out, all the theatrical trailers were (so-called) full frame. Then, when Universal offered corrected BTTF 2 and 3 discs, the trailers on them were upgraded to widescreen format. Now that the entire trilogy release has been corrected for sale in stores, I'm curious if the trailer(s) on the first BTTF have been upgraded to widescreen, or if it is identical to the original release disc in every way. Can anyone check this please?

Awesome, I was just going to ask how the transfers were. Knowing that, I'll definitely pick up the corrected version as soon as I find it. No need to pay more $$$ for the SE's this fall since I don't like the movies enough to watch the extras.
