guess that march 23 date was to good to be true. A friend who saw this at Cannes said it was almost twenty minutes longer....hope we at least get some deleted scenes.

I liked this movie, wanted to love it...hope the dvd is better.

good news just the same

cultshock 01-24-05 09:52 PM

Isn't the domestic release of the film supposed to be slightly cut though? :( I'm holding out to see how the Korean disc from Starmax will be. :)

fumanstan 01-24-05 09:59 PM

Good news since i missed this in theaters. Hopefully it will be a solid DVD release.

marty888 01-24-05 10:09 PM

Any word on who does the commentary?

Hopefully we get both versions. Although is not up to par with Hero IMHO, I will still buy the DVD.

Sessa17 01-24-05 10:38 PM

I've had this on DVD for so long. The DVD release will almost definitely be the domestic release, which is cut a little bit. I'll hold on to my original release, unless the transfer is a significant upgrade.

Been wantin to see this...may rent it first since I've heard mixed feelings on the film, but I also heard that on Hero and I adore Hero.

steebo777 01-25-05 07:54 AM

Awesome! Brilliant film.

fryinpan1 01-25-05 08:11 AM

I loved Hero, so I will give this one a chance too.

rexinnih 01-25-05 09:29 AM

Any info on audio options. Would love a DTS track on this one.

Geofferson 01-25-05 09:33 AM

Thanks for the heads-up!

I watched the new EDKO transfer last night (the one on the 2-disc SE and 3-disc LE versions), and while it looks quite good there's still room for improvement. The DTS track is excellent.

I've been waiting to see how the Starmax release turns out (first week of February), but I think I'll hold-off any other purchase of this title until the R1 is also released.

same here. I've waited so long to buy a good copy I might as well wait a little while longer to see which one is better.

I know the R1 isn't supposed to have a DTS track, but if the transfer is superior to the previous releases, I'll buy the one with the better picture. I know the US version in theatres has supposedly been cut, but it sounds like it was just little clips of spilling blood. It doesn't sound like anything of subtance was taken out of the movie. What I haven't read is if those cuts were from the director. I would be interested in knowing that.

The movie just went wide release in the US about a week ago, it should still be playing somewhere around you.

I was watching those scenes closely on the (uncut) Edko disc, just to see if I could guess where the cuts might be made. This was a somewhat bloodier movie than I expected, moreso than "Hero", but certainly not overdone. I had dismissed as relatively unimportant these reports of cutting out violent/graphic scenes before I saw the film, but now I don't think I'd be so dismissive. Yes, there are some graphic shots, and, yes, I strongly feel they contribute to the film. It's hard to say for certain without seeing it, of course, but I'm much more hesitant about this "cut" version now. I'm afraid cutting too much will detract from the impact of the film.

BTW, I love "Hero", but I preferred "House of Flying Daggers". I'd guess that those who like it less are possibly put-off by the romance and love story being much more at the forefront than in "Hero", as well as the highly melodramatic nature of that romance. But the themes are very much the same as in "Hero" (issues of loyalty, personal desire vs. duty, the good of the one vs. the good of the many, and all that), though their resolution strikes me as quite a bit different. The cinematography is also much less stylized, though IMO no less amazing, and the one-on-one fight scenes don't feature quite the level of individual skill that we saw in "Hero". That aside, I thought "Daggers" was on the whole the better film, though I suspect this is a very personal conclusion.

I agree. The fact that the graphic blood-play is used so sparingly, gives it more of an impact. It'd be ashamed to see it cut.

I have the Edko 1-disc, which isn't as good as the LE, so I'll wait and see before I pick up the R1.

I actually like the cover and compared to Hero, it is a masterpiece.

eau 02-07-05 03:52 PM

Yeah. The cover is more classy than Hero.

TomOpus 02-07-05 05:43 PM

That's a very nice cover. I can't wait to see the specs.

Josh Z 02-07-05 06:30 PM

I would not expect DTS. Sony rarely includes DTS on non-Superbit releases.

Cameron 02-07-05 09:43 PM

dvdanswers can be so cruel can't they...

wennma01 02-07-05 10:41 PM

i can't wait to see this one again!
