Would You Report Someone You Know Who's Doing DVD Piracy
 

There's a co-worker at my job who is burning bootleg DVDs for other co-workers. Once in a while, we talk about movies, DVDs and Video Games. He's burning and selling bootleg DVDs for $5.00 each to other friends and co-workers. Would you report him?

If he is using company resources to support his habit (and it's more than just one or two), I might be inclined to report him to his boss. Every DVD he uses would be money out of the company's pocket that my pay rise or bonus could get paid from.

People do that at my office all the time. No one cares. If they were stealing computers or something, then maybe.....but.....as I said, no one cares. They rent through netflix or whatever and then burn and return, so they can watch it at their leisure. Ain't no thing.

EDIT: oh and no one charges anything. that is kind of weak.

That's not your problem if he is making bootlegs. Unless there is a 100 Thousand Dollars Ransom for turning someone in then go ahead otherwise who cares. Why do you care?

Different companies have different cultures, but... If it's a company you care about and a job you want to keep, then yes, I think it should be reported. I'd probably do it anonymously.

If the miscreant were someone I knew well enough to warn, I'd warn him. If there was a way to get a bunch of people together to tell him to stop, I'd do that. Otherwise, why care about someone who's willing to put everyone else's jobs in jeopardy?

Sooner or later this guy will be reported. At that point, depending on the company, the question will be raised about who else knew, who was buying the discs, and who allowed this to go on via their silence. Heads could well roll.

At a place I once worked, there was a guy selling bootleg VHS tapes under the counter at the security desk. He didn't use company facilties to dupe the tapes, he just sold them there. Then there was a crackdown on video bootleggers in the city, and this guy's supplier got busted, and so did he.

Not only did he get fired, but so did the Head of Security and almost all the guards after it was determined they all knew what was going on but hadn't done anything about it.

Not the same thing, but corporations will react harshly and without mercy to protect their positions.

I knew of a guy who was burning and selling CDs here at work a couple of years ago. I made a comment to one of his friends that I knew what was going on and someone should turn his sorry ass into the RIAA. The guy got the word I guess and stopped doing it. Of course I now get the evil eye anytime I pass him in the hallway. Whatever...

I have no problem with someone making a couple of copies for friends (even though that is still technically a no-no as well), but when you are charging and turning it into a mini-business then I do have a problem with that.

I wouldn't turn him in, but that's pretty weak that he's trying to make a small profit off of it. If he's insanely cheap, tell him to charge a dollar or whatever to cover the cost of the DVDR.

I think the important issue here is - what does it take to cover your ass? Is this guy in a position to cause YOU to get into trouble? Are you his supervisor, and should know that this is going on? Can you catch heat if you turn a blind eye to this?

If the answer is yes, even just ever so slightly, then bust his ass RIGHT NOW! Dont do it because piracy is wrong, dont do it because you should narc out folks doing things on company time they shouldnt be - do it because YOU will lose your job if you dont. Who cares about the rest of it - look out for number one.

I guess its his own business, just don't lend him any of your movies.

People do it at my work.. I could care less. I might not like the person if they were bragging and what not, atleast they movie buffs. Its none of your business what they do, and why help the MPAA and RIAA on there missiong to rule the world... Leave them be, go about your business. Dont be the person no one likes that has to tell the teacher everything

Regardless, i say mind your own business. If it is something that affects the company or your work environment negatively, then i'd consider reporting it. But in the mean time, i wouldn't really care.

I'd keep quiet...have you ever downloaded an mp3 or taped a movie from one you rented? The whole 5 dollar a movie though is absurd and he SHOULDN'T be making a profit, that's pretty bad.

Its a gateway offense. First its copying dvds, then its raping women. If you dont stop him now, you could be the one to blame for the next mass murder/serial rapist we have in the world...

I dont think I would say anything. Assess the situation and like others have said, make sure that it cant come back on you. But sometimes its best to just let someone do what they are doing for the time being.
