N00b question here
 

a friend of mine noticed this and we're wondering if all of the sudden "region-less" or "region 0" dvds are being manufacturered or is this a red flag that its a bootleg? He mentioned auctions selling stuff like that from places like Malaysia and im thinking its a scam. I mean sure you may get a working copy of the movie but my guess is that they arent genuine.

I figured you folks here know 1000x as much about this stuff as I do so id appreciate whatever input you may have

It varies. There are alot of R0 NTSC and PAL titles that are official. However alot of them are also boots or poor quality, etc. The best thing to do is do a bit of searching on here (Int'l Forum is a good start) to make sure you're not getting a boot. Then go over the The Beaver to compare different versions.

a lot of PD titles are region 0 and even legit companies like Blue Underground and troma release region 0 disc. Just check around....if your seeing copies of big budget blockbuster films be assured a boot is coming. Spiderman 2 is not region 0

Also DVD compare for checking versions.

I just wanted to post advising not to buy any non-Malaysian films from Malaysia. There are 2 reasons for it:

1. Malaysia's Film Board edits all movies for content. They remove swearing, sex, gore, etc. from all films. It's like watching the edited for TV version of a movie.

2. All movies for sale legally in Malaysa are going to have a seal/stamp type hologram and signature card on them from the Malaysian Film Board stating that it is approved for sale. If you get something from Malaysia and it doesn't have that, then it's a bootleg.
