Troy DVD, is that it?!?

I'm waffling right now, because it seems like a good deal at the usual $14.99 at CC. I liked the movie in the theater but didn't love it, and there are practically no extras for a 2-disc release. It just seems like one of those DVDs that'll hit the "2 for $20" special bin pretty quickly.

Has there been speculation on an SE later on for this? There are certainly things that could be added like commentaries, DTS, and an extended cut. From what I read early on last year from test screenings, Helen of Troy had a real nude scene. Not the dark, faux nude scene I remember when the movie was released.

From reading the review on DVD I'm inclined to just borrow it from my local library to see the film, and wait for a better DVD release or a big price drop on the current one.

REL77 01-04-05 04:40 PM

$15 Now, or 6 months from now for 2 for $20.... I would rather enjoy it for 6 more and pay an extra $5 for it

El Pollo 01-04-05 04:50 PM

Rel77, I'd agree if it was one of those cases in which I haven't seen the movie or hadn't seen it in a while. It's only been 7 months since I saw it.

DonnachaOne 01-04-05 05:33 PM

It's only $14.99 because it's in release week. I expect it will be $19.99 at Best Buy for another year, $17.99 at least.

The DVD for Troy is absolute garbage!! All the bonus material on the 2nd disc sucks. It's like watching an HBO first look documentary and some Electronic Press Kit. This movie came out May of last year and it baffles me how the producers of the movie had 5-6 months since then to make a really great and extensive DVD and chose not to. Although I enjoyed the movie, I'm disappointed with this release and will pass on it.

I also wonder why Wolfgang Petersen and Brad Pitt and Eric Bana couldn't do an audio commentary for the film.

I decided against it to. It just wasn't good enough to justify spending anything over $14. I'll likely see this in one my local pawn shops in the next few days. I'll probably grab it then. BTW, Movie Gallery will have PVD's of Troy on sale for $9.99 at the end of the month.

It's quite possible that since the film received critical drubbing and did not do particularly well at the box office (when compared to what it cost to make anyway), the studio -- not the producers -- did not feel like spending a whole lot of money on an extensive DVD. Personally I think since the movie wasn't exceptional (although I enjoyed it in theaters), the DVD sales could have actually benefitted greatly from a nice DVD release with extensive extras.

Then how do you explain stuff like Peral Harbor and Van Helsing?

...and the Windtalkers 3-disc set, which I'm still trying to figure out.

DJariya 01-05-05 09:53 PM

Most of these movies make their money back on DVD sales, so what's spending an extra 20 million to produce and market a really great DVD. I heard Troy made almost 500 million worldwide, so I think that's enough incentive to put out a really great DVD. As for so-so movies that got great DVD treatment like Pearl Harbor and Windtalkers, I guess since the studio paid a lot of money to make those movies, they probably thought they could recoup their losses on DVD sales.

Crap expensive movies like Alexander definitely don't deserve a good DVD.

marty888 01-05-05 09:57 PM

I'll pass on this ... considering the wealth of historical material on Troy that's been done for TV (PBS, Discovery Channel, History Channel) the DVD producers could have used a little imagination (and probably not much money) and included some informative extras.

DJariya 01-05-05 10:04 PM

Exactly, that's why I passed on this DVD.

Mr. Cinema 01-05-05 10:46 PM

Who needs extras when you have an anamorphic widescreen picture with 5.1 sound?

namlook 01-06-05 12:10 AM

This is a film destined for a 2 for $15 sale in the future. If you've seen the film recently or don't have a desire to see it right away you might want to wait it out.

Nope. Not even by that standard. Try again.

TROY did wonderful worldwide business.

It may have done wonderful worldwide business, but if the standard of the DVD release is based on box office (which I doubt), it would probably be based upon U.S. box office. The DVD is planned well before theatrical release so I can't imagine the quality or quantity of the DVD release is dependent upon box office.

BTW, a response like "Nope. Not even by that standard. Try again." seems unnecessarily bitchy and arrogant. Just a thought.

Of course all the films are destined to be 2 for $15 'IN' the future!

You don't really think they stay at regular price forever!

If you don't want to get it now than get it 6 months from now in the 2 for $15 sale. -ohbfrank-

Josh H 01-06-05 11:32 AM

I'm fine with it, as I rarely watch extras (only for movies like LOTR that I truly loved and have a lot of interest in all the behind the scenes stuff). Troy doesn't fall in that category, so it's not an issue for me.

DVD Polizei 01-06-05 12:24 PM

Of course there will be an SE version. And a HD-DVD version. And probably 3 more versions.

Not necessarily. Not all DVDs get marked down that low. It depends on what the demand is/how well they are selling. For example a lot of times they go out of print because a new SE is released and they never reach the 2/$15 level because sales were still high at the time of a re-release. Troy is one of those that will probably not maintain high sales over time and is more likely than not to have a big price drop in the near future.

El Pollo 03-01-05 08:29 AM

Since I started this thread... 2 months after the DVD release, it's made a drop to $12.99 at BB. 2 for $15 before May (one year anniversary of theatrical release) even hits... just watch.:)

fumanstan 03-01-05 09:45 AM
