Question about The 400 Blows CC

About 2 months or so ago, I found an estate sale and along with about 50 other DVD's, I picked up 20 Criterion's. It was from a man who passed away, and a friend was selling off his collection of 1000+ DVDs, and he had no clue what he was dealing with. About 15 of the Criterion's were still sealed, and he wanted $2 a piece. One of these still sealed was The 400 Blows. Here is my question, I know it's got to be an authentic R1 because it still had the price sticker on it from Spec's or something similar, but the disc is reflective, like a mirror. Any time I see an original release of this movie the disc is black. It's not the recent release from the Antoine Doinel Box because it has the original front/rear cover art, but I'm just curious if anyone can clear this up for me.

I have this disc. It's the first printing that went OOP and skyrocketed in price on Ebay a few years back. They got the rights back to release it again in the box set.

i don't think that solved his problem...since he doesn't have the box.......check your dvd to see what color it is.......i have the box.......what else did you get for 2 bucks

j_nolan 01-01-05 04:58 PM

I'll buy it for 3. Can't say fairer.

The box version is remastered or share the same transfer as the OOP version?

Fandango 01-01-05 05:10 PM

The new release has a new transfer.

fliggil 01-01-05 05:18 PM

Ok...so what's the difference between my disc, and the black one? Neither is from the reiussued box set, but why the difference?

Other Criterions I picked up @ $2 each... and God created Woman, 39 Steps, and the ship sails on, black narcissus, the blob, branded to kill, carnival of souls, fiend without a face, grand illusion, le million, the magic flute, a night to remember, notorious, picnic at hanging rock, sullivans travels, the third man, tokyo drifter, wild strawberries...some other notable titles 101 Dalmations Limited Issue, Pinocchio Limited Issue, Double Indemnity Image release, rocky & bullwinkle season 1, about 10 Hitchcock's, Monkey Business, Duck Soup and The Cocoanuts all sealed Image releases as well, and a few more all @ $2 each.

^^^score of a lifetime at 2 a piece....i have gotten some great deals, but not that many good titles, that cheap, in one place........to bad the guy is dead, he had good taste

The original, OOP disc is silver. The reissue from the box set is black.

fliggil 01-01-05 05:38 PM

X: Good to hear, thank you, anyone know what this disc is worth? The case is opened but the disc has never been viewed, mint.

Looks like Criterion completists (or speculators) have recently paid $80-100 for sealed ones on eBay.

Cameron 01-01-05 06:01 PM

I need to just throw down the cash and buy the whole set up....

Just don't be under the mistaken impression that we're paying you by the post.

The OOP disc is like looking in a mirror. Is that what you mean by silver? I bought it the day it was released. Here is a pic of the case.

Yes, it looks pretty much like the silver playable side of a DVD except shinier and does reflect like a mirror. The lettering is just a contrasting texture of silver or maybe just the lack of the mirror coating as it seems to have the rainbow-like sheen of the playable side of a DVD.

And it has the frosted white ring.

Thought that is what you meant!

yeah, i sold mine for about 80 bucks on half.com just a few months ago...i figured there was no reason to keep it with having the box set.

I'm no expert, but I originally saw this film on the Fox Lorber DVD. Their transfer wasn't too bad, but obviously not too good, either. Then I bought the Antoine Doinel box. I watched 400 Blows, and it still wasn't a great transfer. I don't even recall seeing a big improvement over the fox lorber one. There's still a lot of dirt and stuff on the print.

Just reviving this thread real quick to get some opinions...
Is there any real value to holding onto the OOP 400 Blows other than sheer 'completist' values? (Which I never plan on completing the CC, unless I stike gold and suddenly have an excess of spending money). One auction just ended for a solid $130, I could easily pick up the Antoine Doinel box set and have an extra $50-60 to throw around. Just want some opinions, thanks.

nope...sell it and get the doinel set....
I have the entire criterion collection and even i decided to sell the original versions of things that had better versions come out....

the only point in saving them would be for the alternate cover art.

Groucho 03-20-05 03:11 PM

I bought this movie based only on the title. Paid a fortune on ebay. It does NOT DELIVER. :(

For the amount you spent on eBay, you probably could've gotten the real thing. Zing!
