Robocop and Silence of the Lambs Criterion editions opinions needed.

Picked up both these movies (Criterion Editions) at a local video game store where they sell used DVD's. Both were only $9.99 and in brand new condiotion. Being that I already have the Robocop boxed set and SOTL SE should I sell these Criterions or keep them??

DrGerbil 12-16-04 01:27 AM

Both are favorites of mine... unless you can get a good price, I wouldn't let either of them go. :)

SFranke 12-16-04 01:28 AM

Sell them and make a nice profit. The superior transfers of the MGM editions more than make up for the extras found on the Criterion editions. Of course, I'm not an extras guy. I rarely listen to commentaries or even view the same extra more than once, if at all.

BTW, SOTL and Robocop, unless sealed, won't fetch you as much as they used to, due to the MGM re-issues. So, it's really a matter of how much they are worth to you. I've seen copies of SOTL go for as little as $13 on ebay, some even less.

I'd keep robocop over the other

Jackskeleton 12-16-04 02:26 AM

I would keep the robocop

Definately keep Robocop.,

If you really like SOTL then keep it, I have the MGM and the Criterion version, just due to the extras on the Criterion.

Robocop, unless I am mistaken, is a different cut of the movie than the MGM. So keep it if you are a fan.

Only keep SOTL if you want the CC special features. I sold mine a good while ago.

JZ1276 12-16-04 04:10 AM

actually, i think the cut of the criterion version is the same as the cut on the version in the boxed set.

DVDBeaver has some great comparisons:
Robocop Comparison and Silence of the Lambs Comparison

I have both of these in CC version, and don't plan on selling either, although I probably will pick up the SotL SE at some point. Robocop I'm not enough of a fan to spring for the entire trilogy.

The MGM Special Edition DVD of SOTL blows away the Criterion in terms of a/v presentation, but the Criterion has some killer features. Personally, I have both in my collection, but it depends on how much you personally care about bonus features. There's no reason to keep the Criterion just for the movie.

I'd keep the SOTL MGM SE and keep the Criterion. But for Robocop, I'd keep both.

The SOTL Criterion is excellent with the better transfer (Although not anamorphic) and sound.

I sadly could never get a copy of the Robo Criterion, but the Trilogy set is excellent!

The MGM SE's transfer is not supervise by Tak Fujimoto (DP) and is overly bright, sure it looks better than the Criterion, but it doesn't look like it should.
The 2.0 Stereo Surround track on the Criterion is also miles better than the 5.1 remix on the MGM. There's virtually no bass in the 5.1 on the MGM, while the Criterion sounds full and deep.

I have both version of SOTL and won't let go of either. I'm an extras kinda gall so the commentrary track is worth holding on to. If your'e into extras you might as well keep the criteron version.

I don' thave the Robocop box set but I probably will pick it up sometime in the future (even though I don't care too much for the other films in the trilogy). It wounldn't hurt to hold on to it unless you need the extra shelf space.

Rammsteinfan 12-16-04 10:18 AM

You could sell em like the said. I sold my Robocop CC for over $50 recently.

Fok 12-16-04 11:00 AM

I'd keep them, they're not available in stores and people have said that Robocopy CC is shown in the correct aspect ratio
