Babylon 5 (B5) worth $52 a Season?

Costco is running a deal where you can pick up each of the seasons of Babylon 5 (there's 5 in all) for $52 each. That's a much better price than I've seen anywhere else (I think the next cloesest was around $65 per episode).

I saw and loved the show when it was on TV. I've been meaning to pick up the series, but with a recent HUGE puchase at Deep Discount DVD during their 20% off sale (cough, cough) I'm a little strapped for cash. I can afford it, but would prefer to get it later (but don't think I'll see a price like this again).

Anyway, I'm curious what other people think that have seen the DVD sets. Are they worth it? Are they well done? Good/great extras? It would be nice to see it in widescreen...

Thanks in advance for any ideas/advice.

Yes, great show, but you can find it for less than that.

Keep your eye out on eBay, Amazon, Half.com, etc for used sets.

I'm rewatching S3 right now and it's worth every penny. You probably can get it used for a better price though.

Yes, I think it's worth it. Sure, you might be able to pick them up used for less, but then you have the hassle of finding the deal, hoping they're in good condition, and paying for shipping.

Don't expect anything fantastic for image quality in the first season or so (check out my reviews for details) but these are still must-buys.

Yes!!! #1 B5 is one of the greatest shows of all time, so IMHO that price is definitely worth it. #2, that is less than I paid for each season (except season #1), so I would say definitely go for it! I'm the type of collector who likes to buy DVD's new, but if you don't mind them used, I'm sure you could find them for less, but it might take some looking.

The commentaries are fantastic (I've only listened to the first two seasons and some of the movie commentaries). The JMS commentaries are very informative, and the cast commentaries are not quite as informative, but a lot of fun to listen to. The featurettes are pretty interesting too. Holly mentioned that the first season quality isn't the best. I would have to concur on that. Edit: Just wanted to point out that there are only 2-5? commentaries per season. They usually do them on the key episodes.

This is kind of off topic about the DVD, but if you don't already know about the lurker's guide, I would highly suggest reading it after every episode you watch:

Holly, I've read your reviews. Thanks for making them!

Numes, thanks for the info on the Lurker's guide. I didn't know about it! Great info!

Yeah, the first season had some "print" issues with the transfer. There were a few episodes that had some print damage. One in particular had a verticle blue line through it during one scene from the same camera. (Know what I mean by that?) Seems like another episode had a problem as well, but the one with the blue line really stood out.

$52 per season is a good buy for new sets. I paid an average of $70 per season thru Amazon. That was the cheapest price I could find from an American website at the time of release. I think Amazon.ca had'em a bit cheaper, but I don't buy Canadian.

I got the first and second seasons from CH TV Club, it was worth the $10 but I didn't really care for it. I did like the continuity amoung the episodes and the parallels between B5 and DS9 were fun to see. If you haven't seen DS9, definitely check it out.
