Popeye(animated)?
Any news of Warner Brothers releasing all of the un-released Popeye animated shorts?I wouldn't mind if Koch came out with another 60's set.
Has there ever been a nice remastered set of all the b&w episodes?
Just the public domain titles and those vary in quality.
So what's the best one so far that contains most/all of them? And are there any plans for the studios to ever release them properly?
Koch released a 3-disc set of the King Features 1960's Popeye which wasn't too bad quality wise. The best public domain release that I have is the one that came out earlier this yr-75th Anniversary Collectors Edition-Popeye The Sailor Man which has 34 cartoons. All the public domain of Popeye have been released.I think Warner Brothers owns everything else except maybe for the 1960's King Features.
Well I hope WB will do the right thing and remaster and release the older classics sometime soon.
Looks like Sony will be releasing Mr. Magoo from the 60's soon so maybe Warner Brothers won't be too far behind.
There are legal issues with Popeye, so until those get resolved, no "official" release is going to come out... just the public domain stuff.
Isn't Warner Brothers remastering the 30's & 40's Popeye animated shorts-wouldn't make much sense to remaster something that they don't own to begin with?
As I understand it, Warner owns the shorts, but another company (King Features) owns the character. Warner's remastering is in anticipation of a TV/DVD/etc release, but also for archival purposes.
