Midnight Cowboy -- DTS?

Hey all. I bought a Midnight Cowboy DVD from eBay.
It arrived today, and oddly had a DTS banner at the top of it that I haven't seen on other copies of the DVD.

I also noticed that IMDB says that Midnight Cowboy has a Widescreen and Pan and Scan version on the disc. The one I have is widescreen only.

Here's a picture of the front.
Click me

It also has 9 subtitle tracks (I noticed this by hitting the subtitles button on my DVD player remote), and the copies I've seen only have English, Spanish, and French subtitles.

Did I get a bootleg?

There is no DTS track on MC and thus no banner on an original copy. You should really do better research before purchases on eBay. Sorry!

Bricks II 12-02-04 06:56 PM

Looks like the boot is better than the authentic (no P&S, DTS).

Poor MGM, maybe Sony will Superbitize it.

The boot seems to have everything the original has (except for P&S, which I wouldn't want anyway) and more.
I don't mind to be honest. ;)

FYI, the "9" sticker usually gives it away.

The DTS track doesn't necessarily mean it's better. The Dolby vs. DTS debate aside, the DTS track is almost certainly converted over from the Dolby 4.0 track on the authentic disc. It's just the Dolby track reencoded, containing nothing special or inherent to the DTS format.

(What would really funny, of course, would be if some praised the DTS track as superior to the Dolby. This would be like those kids who pretend to get high from children's aspirin in Go.)

So, basically the DTS track exists for those who have DTS encoders?

Well, it exists because bootleggers know that many consumers (especially in Asian countries, apparently) seek out DTS for the sake of DTS. It's doubtful that there's anyone out there with a system that has a DTS decoder but not a Dolby decoder, especially given that Dolby is a part of the standard DVD format, so it doesn't serve any sort of compatibility purpose.

I realize this; I was just trying to be funny (unsuccessfully, it seems ;)).

You do however realize that the buying and selling of pirated DVD's is illegal and punishable by law don't you??

Plus, it is frowned upon by this forum and consequently the thread should be closed by a mod and perhaps reported to the government...

I must say it sounds as if you, that is scott1598,
have either:
a. a corncob shoved in your ass sideways, or:
b. you are pissed off about something else and decided to be a whiney little bitch and post a reply like:

"You do however realize that the buying and selling of pirated DVD's is illegal and punishable by law don't you??

I mean seriously, only a complete dick would write that, he didnt know it was a bootleg, he just had a question about the dvd he bought.

sorry officer..im sure he wont do it again

I rarely buy dvds on Ebay these days, but if I do, the seller must have great feedback, they must reside in the U.S. and they must have a digital photo of the dvd. If I suspect a bootleg, I don't bid or I ask specific questions of the seller and compare the information with a site like Amazon that lists all of the specifics on a particular dvd. If I were you, I would contact the seller and rant about this dvd being a bootleg. If they value their feedback, they may offer a refund minus the shipping fees. If not, consider it a lesson learned. At least it wasn't a dvd like the Killer or Hard Boiled (or Salo), in which you paid a lot more for it most likely. Good Luck.

yeah apparently the truth hurts,
so much so that you have to be even more immature, and drag
thy self down even further into a pit of nevermore.
So i am terribly sorry if ive hurt your feelings, just thought speaking the mind would be a breath of fresh air in what had otherwise become a crying fest started by yours truly.

axistolife 12-03-04 03:08 PM

Oh and by the way, how is that DTS track on midnight cowboy, since that is what the topic is about. Perhaps when remixed it turned out better than that crappy 4.0 mix on the current dvd.

supersonicx 12-03-04 05:04 PM

I'm not sure, to be honest.
I don't have a DTS encoder on my DVD player (Norcent DP300).

<i>Mod note: No he's just been here longer and is more familiar to what is isn't allowed on DVDtalk. For instance rule #1 is:

Posting of personal attacks against another member, moderator or administrator in the forum

Which your post is boarder-line (if not over) what is being talked about here.

Additionally,

• Posting Information on how to defraud any company or promotion of any kind of illegal or unethical activity
• Posting requests for copies of copyrighted material, or "how-to-get/make bootleg material" instructions

are both forbidden by the rules. So while the original post of did I end up w/ a boot leg is accepable, carrying on the conversation to the point of discussing where it was obtained and how it compares to the official release is not. Since the question has been answered there's no further need for this post so I'm closing the thread.
