Is there a new Blade Runner on the horizon? I think so.

Every major retailer had Blade Runner on sale this weekend. Wal-Mart practically gave it away for $3.88. There's no reason to give away this particular film...unless a new one is on the horizon.

djtoell 11-28-04 01:02 AM

...Or unless it's a really popular film currently priced at Warner's lowest price point, making it a good loss leader for retailers to use to draw customers in to browse. I doubt that many retailers are in on a big secret Blade Runner plan.

There's been talks about a new Blade Runner DVD for years. Ridley Scott once mentioned something in the lines of having a 3 or 4 disc DVD of Blade Runner. One disc with the theatrical version, another with the director's cut, and another with a new director's cut and he expressed intrest in recording an audio commentry.

I'd love for that to happen since it's one of my all time favorite movies; certainly my favorite movie with Harrison Ford.

PopcornTreeCt 11-28-04 01:28 AM

Usually that is a good indicator but not in this case.

D-Ball 11-28-04 01:32 AM

If WB could release a special edition, they would. You can read about it here:
http://www.brmovie.com/BR_Special_Edition.htm

Wannabe 11-28-04 02:01 AM

Forget about the super-duper 3 disc special edition. All WB has to do is to add a 5.1 or DTS track, a commentary track, and an Amray case and...voila!: Blade Runner: SE.

Regardless, this particular title is not the type that usually goes into the bargain bin. I still think something is up.

FinkPish 11-28-04 02:17 AM

This title was released back in '97, with no extras and a shitty transfer. It is the perfect candidate for the bargain bin.

Daniel L 11-28-04 04:07 AM

No DTS = no sale.

QuiGonJosh 11-28-04 04:10 AM

Theres a 2-Disc coming next year I thought. I read it in the Rumor Mill at DigitalBits a couple a weeks ago.

marc edison 11-28-04 05:47 AM

Im sure there was a special box set released a while ago with prints etc. There may have been a commentary with it too. And im sure it contained the theactrical and dc.

Isn't that just the same disc in a nicer box with a bunch of other collectables in it?

marc edison 11-28-04 06:39 AM

Yeah, i thought it contained both versions but it doesnt.

DVD Polizei 11-28-04 07:19 AM

Maybe they were selling it for $3.88 because few people buy it. :p

And besides, it's Wal-Mart for god sakes. They'd sell your grandmother if they could--at a bargain of course.

Then you will never buy another WB title again.

You are in the camp of people who believe that DTS in name alone is superior to DD. That's not always the case. As stated many times, DD can be as good or better than DTS if properly done.

I vaguely remembered that! I did a search and...

Here's some good news and bad news all at once. Sources are telling us that Warner is FINALLY at work once again on a Blade Runner: Special Edition. That's the good news. The bad news is that instead of the 3 or 4-disc ultimate edition we all hoped for (featuring all the different versions of the film), the title is now likely to be one of the studio's 2-disc editions, featuring only the recent "director's cut" version of the film (remastered from a new HD transfer), the Channel 4 On the Edge of Blade Runner documentary and perhaps a few other odds and ends. Look for it sometime in the first half of 2005.

dom56 11-28-04 11:02 AM

Well, screw that then. I want the international cut that was on the Criterion LD which I also owned. Let face it, we are never going to get that version on DVD as long as Jerry Perenchio (one of the co-executive producer of film) give a okay. But he and Scott are still bitterly fueling over the rights. Pretty sad indeed. :(

Fok 11-28-04 12:44 PM

Guess we're still going to have to wait, oh well.

lewzer76 11-28-04 07:38 PM

I hope we get something in the next year. This is a great film that has yet to get a decent treatment on dvd.

ha ha ha ha, You must be new to the dvd scene. There is many reasons why a new Blade Runner is far from coming any closer to us. Not gonna happen anytime soon.

wm lopez 11-28-04 08:12 PM

I think it is a good indacation, because remember the RAMBO movies were in the $5 bind at Wal-Mart.
And also HEAT, GOODFELLAS were always on sale everywhere for the past year.

Exactly. Apparently, it's personal.

From a thread at the DVD Forums

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Taken from Josh Steinberg thread over at hometheatherforum.com

I just attended a lecture at my college being given by producer Alan Ladd, who was one of Blade Runner's many producers. Thankfully, there was at least one person in the audience who couldn't resist asking about the film's troubled DVD release, and here's what Mr. Ladd had to say:

-Ladd says that one of the film's other producers, Jerry Perenchio, has the final say over whether or not any new versions of the film can be issued. Ladd said that Perenchio and Scott absolutely loathed each other. Perenchio is a billionaire, and has no financial need for the film to be reissued. He believes that it's in legal limbo because Perenchio hates Scott and is suppressing any new versions purely out of spite.

-Ladd says at one point people were being brought together for work on a special edition DVD, and that he was interviewed, or at least contacted about being interviewed, before legal issues brought the film to a halt. Ladd says that Scott was considering having Ford re-record a new narration before the plug was pulled on the project.

...and, of course, the question on everyone's mind:

-Ladd is not optimistic at all about the film being reissued or redone. He actually stated that he believes because of the conflict between Perenchio and Scott that it will never happen.

Class316 11-29-04 09:24 AM

The SE as most people want it will never happen. That’s why I got a transfer of the criterion version on DVD. It has the voiceovers, extra violence, and everything.

Adrenaline 11-29-04 10:23 AM

Maybe with all of these Warner snapper sales they're clearing out their snapper stock holds?

Class316 11-29-04 01:27 PM

What's in the Criterion verison and not on the current DC DVD:

Batty sticks his thumbs in Tyrell's eyes, which bleed copiously.

Pris lifts Deckard up by his nostrils when she beats him up.

Deckard shoots Pris a third time.

More of Pris kicking and screaming when she is shot by Deckard.

Shows Roy actually pushing the nail through his hand.

Contains the happy ending scene [cut out of the DC].

And let me tell you all that extra violence kicks ass :D
