I also sent my email, letting them know my disappointment and my decison to not buy the DVD. And I don't care if it's under ten dollars. Hell, I would pay 20.00 for a widescreen copy of this thing at this point.
|
this is so sad, this is one of the most beautifully shot sci-fi films and I loved watching the laser version, but after the debacle I had with Meaning of Life, I expect nothing more than utter garbage from universal.
|
Sent my feedback to Universal. This pan & scan Colossus: The Forbin Project is a major disappointment to me. It has been very high on my wish list since i started buying DVDs in 1999. Can't fathom why Universal would do something this stupid. (Did someone's dog eat the widescreen master or something?) I thought that P&S only releases had pretty much disappeared. That isn't true, sad to say.

Just received a reply from Universal:
Thank you for contacting us and for your interest in 'Colossus: The Forbin Project.' As you noted, the DVD was released in fullframe. We appreciate your input and will forward your comments to the appropriate department Sincerely, Universal Studios Home Entertainment |
By "appropriate department" I hope they don't mean the "trash can" :)
Actually, it's nice that they responded. Maybe they might re-think and re-release in the correct OAR. Damn, wouldn't that be pretty amazing? |
Thanks for the link, this is my feedback:
"I was really looking forward to adding this dvd to my collection but, finding out that you released it at 1.33:1 instead of the OAR of 2.35:1 is really disappointing. I am sad to say this release will not be added to my collection, even at $7.00 a copy, it is not worth it. I would have gladly paid $20 for this if it were released in the proper OAR. I hope this inferior release will be remedied. I am also sad to say that I will not purchase any Universal release which is not presented in it's OAR. Thank you and remember the only way to view a film is in the OAR!" |
I also received a reply from Universal.

Originally posted by zyzzle A travesty. It is truly stupid and pointless to release a movie that fans have been waiting for 20+ yrs in a butchered P&S form! Universal shame on you. http://www.intergate.com/~tobeornot2...ISSED-RED1.gif PEACH |
Originally posted by digiboy This has to be some test marketing nonsense. Get these titles out with minimal investment, sell them cheap and make the profit. What a shame. worth posting this link, I just wrote to them myself. Email Universal |
Sent separate mails regarding Colossus and Iceman. Give Iceman some love too.
|
Did anyone here any rumors of them releasing a real version (WS)? Has anyone posted on http://www.planetfeedback.com? I just sent one to universal on another movie so I've used up my whining for the day.
|
Any news on the Wide Screen release? This is one movie I'd really like to have but can't get myself to buy a full screen movie any more.
|
I was really hoping a WS version would be out in time for this 20% sale!
|
I've given up hoping for a proper WS release. Maybe it will be released in widescreen on one of the new HD formats in a few years.
|
I am hoping it will be released in widescreen in another region at the very least.
It's amazing to me the studio dropped the ball on this one so horribly bad. Did anybody ever hear back from them after they contacted them? |
I've never heard back from any studio I've ever contacts. I wish the studios would just set up direct polls about what movies you want, what features you would want (e.g. DTS) and what format.
|
It's not going to be done right until someone else buys the rights to it.
|
I also emailed Universal to complain about the pan & scan.
|
Universal also need to release The Shadow and Timecop in OAR. I want to buy them but not in Full-Screen.

Yeah - my thoughts are contacting the the studios regarding their DVDs is about as effective as submitting those requests to my nearest brick wall. I do contact them but realize I've accomplished nothing. If they had a department for those requests it might mean something.

R2 widescreen release available in May 08 http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=528993
|
Thanks for the tip. I preordered it. Thanks to nemein and Oppo too.
|
Oh glorious day!
You all can thank me for this, as I was just about to convert my widescreen laserdisc to DVD. ;) |
Since the only thing going right now is the R2 release please follow up in the thread linked above...
|
If there only was a way to eliminate the 4% PAL speed-up on NTSC systems.... I would be in heaven.
Hey NUMANOID: I'll BUY your laserdisc version... I'd rather have the film in letterbox at lesser quality than anamorphic widescreen with the 4% speedup. Seriously PM me, as I'd like to make that LD to DVD transfer of FORBIN PROJECT! |
