New to Anime
Could you recommend some really good ones?
|
hmmm... this is gonna be a hotly contested topic... I'd recommend starting with some of these:
Akira Grave of the Fireflies Ghost in the Shell I know there's others, and again, people are gonna disagree on what's the best all around... Also, a good place to start is IMDB's top animated films, and ignore the pixar/disney entries: http://www.imdb.com/chart/animation |
thanks, seen those. I'm thinking more series related stuff.
|
i would content this topic purely cos anime fans separate themselves from live action fans, and hence its difficult to tell what to suggest cos many highly regarded anime is much more like the majority of live action than the majority of anime. so what you really want is to say the type of story you like - some of it could be in anime and some of it in live action...
|
I'm not into series that much, but I hear high praise regarding the Neon Genesis Evangelion and GITS: Stand Alone Complex series.
|
Well, I liked Ghost in the Sheel:SAC, I liked Appleseed. I liked the current Cutie Honey series, Liked Grave of the Fireflies, Akira, etc.
|
Im confused, you say you're new to anime, but every suggestion you're given you say you've already seen? It sounds like you know enough to make your own decisions, try http://www.anime-planet.com to find anime similar to what you like.
|
|
Cowboy Bebop is a MUST.
But you probably already seen that one......even though you are new to anime. |
Macross (Plus and Zero as well) and Ninja Scroll is good as well
|
ccwboy bebop
kite vampire hunter d blood the last vampire princess mononoke spirited away akira last exile anything by hiyao miyazaki ghost in the shell ninja scroll also, do a search; this subject has been done to death |
Neon Genesis Evangelion, one of the best series of all time. If you want to get really retro, go with Giant Robo, which is just out now on DVD.
Newer, I'd go with Paranoia Agent (psychological), which just hit the streets, and NOIR, an awesome chicks with guns series (eat your heart out Dirty Pair). Something more funky and scary? Try Boogiepop Phantom. Something more fun and light-hearted? Try Princess Nine, a girls vs. boys baseball series. Swords? The Ninja Scroll series. Or Samurai X. And you can't go wrong with Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex. That's turning into an awesome series. |
I agree with UKingdom - this subject has been DONE TO DEATH - try a search. B4Bishop - your stats say "Senior Member", so do you actually mean to tell me that you don't know that search is your friend?? Do you also mean to tell me that you have not seen this same question asked at least every 2 weeks?????? Why did I even click on this thread?? Just to see if yet somebody else was asking the same question again I guess. Excuse the threadcrap, but just couldn't avoid it!
|
Ah, leave the poor guy alone :-)
I like when people ask the more general "what should I check out?" questions.....stuff like Black Jack and Boogiepop Phantom never pop up on favorites or top ten lists, but are good shows you can plug to the new anime fan when they ask for suggestions.....they can find GITSSC(edit) and Ninja Scroll without anyone's help. Animatrix.....nice "first anime" to show the U.S. movie fans who think "Pokemon" when they hear "anime." |
yeah, leave the poor guy alone. I've seen some of the threads, but I agree was too lazy to do a full search. Sorry
As to the new to anime. Yeah, I've seen the popular ones, but after that, nothing. Thanks for the suggestions guys, I do apprecaiate it!! Thunbs up!!! |
Anyone who doesnt recommend Excel Saga is a HEATHEN and part of the ignorant masses!
;) |
Bandai Entertainment has got a number of complete collections for the holiday seasons. They are cheaper than buying the volumes separately but they come in the form of a brick/digipack though.
.hack//SIGN Banner of the Stars Banner of the Stars II Escaflowne Love Hina S-CRY-ed Witch Hunter Robin |
I would also recommend the following which I have:
Azumanga Daioh FLCL GTO RahXephon R.O.D TV and Read or Die OVA (or is it OAV?) Saber Marionette J and the others after |
cowboy bebop : very good cheap boxet in korea ($40?) at dvdfromkorea.com or koreandvds.com
last exile : boxset in december that cheaper than individual discs (usa) serial experiments lain : boxset in january in the usa ninja scroll : good dvd from korea for $5 (!) with hunter robin : boxset just out in the usa... |
I think the Last Exile boxset is exclusive to a handful of stores only, namely, Suncoast and possibly Rightstuf.com.
|
I highly recommend Escaflowne, great series. You just can't stop watching until the very end.

Okay, I'm really new to anime. My general impression is the Pokemon crap, but I know there's much more to it than that.. I just haven't ever seen any. I've been debating testing the waters, and have a question or two.
I see Cowboy Bebop listed a lot here, and in another thread I made mention of possibly trying this out because people say it's a lot like Firefly, or Serenity if you please, and I loved that show. My first question about anime in general.. how jarring is it with overdubs? Are most overdubbed and/or subtitled? I don't mind subtitles, but I'd rather not. Or do the DVDs have the option for overdubs and original with subtitles being the versitile format it is...? Second question, about Cowboy Bebop in specific, would it be better to check out the movie first, or the beginning of the show, as a way to introduce myself to anime? Sorry if these questions have been done to death before.. I figured I'd be safe tucking them in this thread. Thanks! |
