Do you ever blind buy just based on subject material?

For example, the movie Warriors of Heaven and Earth is coming out in about month and although I have no idea about what the film is about (save from what I've seen from the trailer) I'm buying it just based soley on the subject material. Same thing goes for Troy, and the upcoming Alexander.

Thats what I did, when i purchased I Spit On Your Grave, and as well when I ordered Thriller: A Cruel Picture.

I, too got Thriller!

I do in the area of docimentaries. I put back a Howard Hughes documentary today because I remember a review that stated this version used old source materials and so quality was poor.

If it's quirky and offbeat, I usually blind buy and enjoy.

I also blind buy documentaries alot. The only example I can think of right now is The Weather Underground, which is phenominal, but if the subject matter is interesting, I tend to gloss over whether or not the doc is well-made (kind of like watching the shows about WWII on the History Channel, it doesn't matter how good they are, I find them too interesting not to watch).

Many blind buys... some have been superb (Save The Green Planet) and others only okay (Thriller). Never judge a film by it's cover art...

So, by your tastes, you can never go wrong if you blind buy a rape/revenge film? ;)

Yes, b/c I'm a Latin teacher, I will blind buy documentaries related to the Classics for potential classroom use (ironically I almost never show videos, but I guess I'm searching for some options in case I ever need to).

I will do blind buys, but I try to make sure that I will be at least somewhat content with the purchase. So I try to read up a little bit to see what reviews and other posters have to say about it. Even if it is a negative review, it can help me decide whether it was something that would be good for me. I am also more likely to blind buy if it is a director or sometimes an actor that I really enjoy.

Solely revenge is why I've purchased ..

Baise Moi
Thriller
Lady Snowblood series (2)
Prisoner 701 Scorpion series (2 so far)
I Spit on your Grave

I'd also include Kill Bill, but heard too much about this before buying to be fair. So,

I did for Comic Book Villians. I had no idea what it was about, but it had a good cast listing and it was about comic books and an indy movie. All winning elements, in my book, and I was glad I picked it up.

Another was My Life With Morrissey, another indy movie that appealed to me as a potential cult favorite. However, the movie really disappointed me.

I've done a lot of blind buys... esp with tv on dvd

cases in point:
Sex and the City - LOVED IT
Oz - (actually to be honest I did netflix this first)
Sopranos - glad that I borrowed the 3rd season from the library.. I got bored by the end of it. So I just have S1 & S2 and honestly I could get rid of them and not miss 'em
CSI - LOVED IT
L & O both CI and SVU - LOVED BOTH
Alias - LOVE IT
Queer As Folk - LOVED LOVED LOVED IT
Six Feet Under - LOVED IT
There's more but I can't think of them off the top of my head at the moment. I'm on the verge of blind buying Homicide Life on the Street ... all 5 seasons in the current DDD sale cause ~$140 for 5 seasons of a show that I've heard good things about, seems like a safe buy.

I blind buy a lot of movies as well and my regrets are few... Hollow Man... Blue Streak (should have known better than to buy a Martin Lawrence movie... I despise him and his humor)... Taxi Driver (just can't get into it)... Road to Perdition (what was it about?). There's got to be at least 100+ that I blind bought successfully.

I bought "Quills" just for some Kate Winslet goodness, but I went blind after seeing Geoffrey Rush in all his unmajestic hairyness. Does that count?
