Have you ever recorded something and played it back at a faster speed? You'll notice the voices sound higher, like Alvin and the Chipmunks. When they transfer films to PAL, they don't alter frames like they do for NTSC. For NTSC, they take the 24 frames per second of film, and duplicate some of them so they fit the 30 frames per second of NTSC. This causes some artifacts here and there, but keeps the film at the right speed. For PAL transfers, they simply speed up the film to 25 frames per second. There are no frame artifacts, but the film runs 4% faster, and thus the voices sound higher. There are ways of correcting the audio, not sure how often it gets done though.

Why R1 get screwed again while the rest of the world gets a 4-disc edition? Are they trying to get us triple dip?
|
I can tell when a dvd suffers from pal speed up. I do audio work so it's eaasier for me to notice though. However I think most don't notice it, a few friends notice the shorter length of the films too.

so we are getting dts right?

The 3-disc and its content is set, I assume, for those of us in Region 1. But I wonder if a letter-writing campaign might encourage a rethinking of the international-only distribution of the 4-disc Deluxe Collector's Edition. Fair to say most of us on this forum want it. I wonder how many others know what's going on; I wonder how many of them want the 4-disc set. Anyone who is in love with this film, as I am, is going to want as much bonus material as they can get. If the powers hear enough from us, they might decide that there is money to be made from going "deluxe" in R1.
Okay, so this is probably more wishful thinking than anything else. But doesn't the possibility exist that something like this could turn the tide? --THX |

I remember a sketch that was aired before one of the award shows back in 1998--probably the MTV Movie Awards. Featured, as I recall, Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn as two studio executives trying to get James Cameron to make a sequel to Titanic. Great piece. Wonder if it's one of the parodies on the 4-disc.
--THX |
I'm not going to get all worked up over some trailers and a few parodies. The 3-disc version is fine with me.

The craziest part is that the fourth disc is all MTV and SNL parodies. Isn't that kind of quintessential American humor? I have a hard time believing that Latin Americans are going to appreciate a Ben Stiller & Vince Vaughn sketch from the MTV Movie Awards more than Americans. If the 'no DTS for Region 1' rumor turns out to be true, then that's really asinine. Americans make up by far the largest portion of home theater owners the world over, meaning we're currently the world's biggest market for DTS DVD's. How many Costa Ricans actually have 6.1 DTS setups in their homes, do you think? I can tolerate a foreign film having an inferior region 1 DVD - that is to be expected in a lot of cases. But there's no call for a film like Titanic - an American film, and one that made a shitload of its total revenue from American movie-goers and home video consumers - to be playing that game. I swear I think it's all about snobby studio execs who think that "average Americans" are a bunch of obnoxious, classless louts who lack the sophistication of their European counterparts. I seriously think that's what it's all about. Give the dummies the dumbed-down version - if they complain loudly then we can take it as proof that they're primed to be triple-dipped down the line. We've made these guys so rich and they have absolutely no respect for us as consumers. It really sucks.

Those other language tracks take up bit space...the very same bit space that other countries have free for something like, oh, a DTS track or something. It's not a statement on the "classless-ness" of americans in any way and it's also ridiculous that you would assert that foreign films would have an inferior presentation here. Regardless of where you live or where the movie was produced, if you have people doing their job properly, you should be getting the best presentation possible.
I don't think this issue is the "classless" Americans issue either, but it IS what studios see "average" Americans buying. All of us here in DVD Talk are in a bubble -- the "average" American is buying his DVDs at Wal-Mart and even after all this time and all of the educational materials out there, is still looking for the movie to FILL his screen. I'm a little surprised that there aren't specs for a Full Screen version of Titanic! |

Further Details [Region 4] In today from the folks at 20th Century Fox was the long-awaited announcement of a new Titanic special edition set. The box-office smash will arrive in a two-disc special edition release as well as a four-disc deluxe collector's edition aimed at devout fans on the film. On the surface the release looks like it will be jam-packed with extras and a much improved presentation over the first release. The two-disc set, on the back of the September launch of the new website www.titanicthemovie.com, features a new nine-minute alternate ending shown for the first time, a 50 minute collection of branched behind the scenes footage and three new commentary tracks, including one from Director James Cameron. The four-disc set will also contain over 45 minutes of new deleted footage (including the "new kiss" between Jack and Rose), several production and special effects featurettes, an in-depth TV special, a HBO First Look piece, three parodies of the film and a selection of trailers. Both releases boast a new, 16:9 high definition transfer and a DTS ES 6.1 soundtrack, which should make it one impressive set. We hope to bring you cover art as soon as it arrives. Look out for both sets from November 30, 2005. |

I don’t own many Region 2 DVDs, but I find the pitch increase quite noticeable with the few that I do have. (The American President comes to mind.). I have always guessed that this is because of my background in music and audio. The texture and pitch of the entire soundtrack is raised (I would say at least a good quarter-step) as a result of the PAL speedup, and I often find it rather grueling to endure. |
Yes, PAL speed up is very apparent if you know it exists. I have some PAL copies of Pulp Fiction and the beginning music sounds awful sped up. My UK copy of Dick Tracy is also sped up. I thought it was just a bad transfer or something until I read more about the subject. Even tv shows like 24 are sped up, probably because they have 24p masters. Kiefer Sutherland is definitely not as high pitched as he sounds on the UK Season 2 set. Though for $20 that I paid for it I can handle it.
Paramount has been pretty good about DTS lately, with Top Gun and the Star Trek titles. |

Bottom line: I think that I, and others here, have a right to be pissed over this situation. Titanic isn't some obscure film, or movie that enjoyed the majority of its popularity overseas while being largely ignored here. It's a slap in the face to get an inferior DVD when all the other regions - well, okay, admittedly I have no idea what region 5 and 6 are getting - receive something a lot better. Has it ever happened before? Yes. Has the reverse happened? Yes again. But that doesn't mean it's unreasonable to get upset about it as a consumer either. |
The Digital Bits has the official announcement:
http://thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents Aside from there being DTS on all the versions (including R1, apparently), the specs are identical to the ones posted above. The only new and interesting item is the fact that the big, all-inclusive documentary we were promised at the press conference is not on the set, allegedly nixed by Cameron. Quite the shame, in my opinion. Seems like this set is now to be a big happy-smiles look at the making of the movie, and not the "Under Pressure"-esque look we were promised. Perhaps the commentaries will make up for it. And I bet this is why the set suddenly went from four discs to three (that being the loss of the documentary), and I also bet that the elusive fourth disc will be a Best Buy exclusive. Shame about all of this, though...it shouldn't have been this convoluted. But I'm still looking forward to this set. |
