Putting together a Disney Animated DVD Collection...

Hello all,

I'm trying to put together a relatively comprehensive collection of animated Disney films on DVD. I don't need every obscure title, particularly direct to video releases. And, if possible, I would like to avoid double dipping. So I have no problem waiting for announced/suspected special editions.

Here is what I have so far:

Aladdin Platinum Gift Set
Lion King Platinum Gift Set
Mulan Special Edition
Beauty and the Beast Platinum
Snow White Platinum
Sleeping Beauty Special Edition
Alice in Wonderland Masterpiece Edition
Monsters Inc. Collector's Edition
Finding Nemo Collector's Edition
A Bug's Life Collector's Edition
Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box

I am currently trying to track down a reasonably priced copy of the Tarzan Special Edition. And I plan on picking up the Emperor's New Groove and Dinosaur Special Editions.

So my question is, which currently released Disney animated DVD's should I pick up? Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Doug

My opinion is that you need everything in this list (as well as the Pixar stuff of course):

1. Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs
2. Pinocchio
3. Fantasia
4. Dumbo
5. Bambi
6. Saludos Amigos
7. The Three Caballeros
8. Make Mine Music
9. Fun And Fancy Free
10. Melody Time
11. The Adventures Of Ichabod And Mr. Toad
12. Cinderella
13. Alice In Wonderland
14. Peter Pan
15. Lady And The Tramp
16. Sleeping Beauty
17. 101 Dalmatians
18. The Sword In The Stone
19. The Jungle Book
20. The Aristocats
21. Robin Hood
22. The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh
23. The Rescuers
24. The Fox And The Hound
25. The Black Cauldron
26. The Great Mouse Detective
27. Oliver & Company
28. The Little Mermaid
29. The Rescuers Down Under
30. Beauty And The Beast
31. Aladdin
32. The Lion King
33. Pocahontas
34. The Hunchback Of Notre Dame
35. Hercules
36. Mulan
37. Tarzan
38. Fantasia 2000
39. The Emperor's New Groove
40. Atlantis: The Lost Empire
41. Lilo And Stitch
42. Treasure Planet
43. Brother Bear
44. Home On The Range

I am aware that some of these aren't out yet or are out of print. I am trying to track down a Tarzan Collector's Edition (2 disc) as well. Let me know if you have any luck finding it. There are quite a few Gold Collection ones that you can pick up because some of them won't be getting Platinum treatment yet as far as I know. I would say get The Sword in the Stone, Aristocats, Robin Hood, The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh, The Rescuers, The Fox and the Hound (quality isn't that great on this one though), The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective, Oliver and Company, The Rescuers Down Under, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, and of course the Emperor's New Groove Collector's Edition (2 disc) is a must. You should also get Atlantis Collector's Edition (2 disc), Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, and Home on the Range (I thought this movie sucked though). Also, get the 60th anniversary Dumbo DVD release. For Saludos Amigos, The Three Caballeros, Make Mine Music, Fun and Fancy Free, and Melody Time, I say it's up to you if you want them. I got them of course, but it's up to you. There is also the American Legends DVD that has four different cartoons on it, one of which was one of my favorites growing up, Paul Bunyan. I would say wait on Pocahontas and Lilo and Stitch because the 2 disc versions are coming out next year. Pocahontas is supposed to come out January 2005. If you can find the Peter Pan SE anywhere I say to pick that up as well, because it will probably be a while until the Platinum comes out. I got it on ebay new for about $30. The Fantasia Anthology (3 disc) is out of print as well as the individual releases for Fantasia and Fantasia 2000, but Fantasia is coming out as a Platinum eventually. Personally, I just picked up the individual movies and never got the anthology. I also say to try and get the Disney Treasures if you can. Those are very good, especially if you want all the Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, Pluto, etc. cartoons.

Platinum Titles still to come out (only the first two dates are confirmed):

Bambi (3/1/05)
Cinderella (10/4/05)
The Little Mermaid (10/06 possibly)
Lady and the Tramp (3/07 possibly)
101 Dalmatians
The Jungle Book
Pinocchio
Peter Pan
Fantasia

My wife has been at work on this Disney thing for years. she has like 79 titles which is a bit much. Of hers I think these 50 are worth having, but you can ignore the OOP ones for now and wait for the rerelease. Disneystore.com (now Disneydirect.com) has the Fantasia Anthology DVD set for $54.99. A little steep, but it is a nice set.

Well if you don't need all the obscure titles, you certainly don't need Dinosaur. It isn't considered a classic, and it isn't very good either.

Anyway, EVERY movie in Nova's list has been released with the exception of Bambi & Cinderella, both are slated for next year. That is the official list of classics, BTW.

Novasonic & darkside, thanks for the comprehensive lists! That is exactly what I was looking for!

littlefuzzy, thanks for the link. Looks like a very informative site.

too much, that actually isn't much more than sealed ones go for on eBay. Thanks!

Michael Corvin, the main reason I was gonna pick up Dinosaur is that I heard that it is a pretty good special edition. Is that not the case? Or is the movie so bad, that it isn't worth getting, regardless of DVD quality?

Thanks again everybody!

Doug

I didn't think Dinosaur was that bad. Technically, it's a great achievement and looks great on DVD. Lots of nice extras on the 2-disc set.

But, everyone has their opinion. Maybe you should rent/borrow it and see for yourself before buying.

I didn't think Dinosaur was that bad. I enjoyed it. It was kind of like The Land Before Time in 3D.

No Dinosaur wasn't that bad. I enjoyed it and it had a great combination of live action mixed with CG. I was just pointing out that you didn't want obscure, I would put this last under the other 44 films, as well as the Disney Treasures as for collecting priorities.

Does anybody else agree with me that Home on the Range was pretty crappy?

Yes. It was touted as the last hand-drawn (or mostly hand-drawn) Disney movie. Sad that it has trouble with it's 74 minutes. Saw it at the $1 theater. Skip it.

Secondspin.com has a used copy of the Dinosaur 2-disc edition for $17.95. The things I've gotten from them have been in excellent condition.

If you find a reasonably priced special edition of Tarzan, let me know!

I would also recommend the 2-disc editions of Emporer's New Groove and Dinosaur.
