Friday Release Date

I notice that Shrek 2 is being released Friday

Is this not unusual as all Dvds have a tuesday release date
Have any other ones not been released on Tuesday

Yes....a few, not many. Ghost ship is one I remember.

Wasn't the first Shrek released on a Friday as well?

Spiderman was also released on a Friday.

Shrek 2 is being released on the same day as The Incredibles.

I belive Shrek was released on the same day as another Pixar film.

Hmmmm.

Occasionally big titles will do this. First, it sets them apart from all other titles being released that week. Second, it actually gives them a few extra days to count toward their revenue (which is cheating in my book, but still a common industry practice).

For example, Spiderman opened in theaters the Wednesday before a holiday weekend. It's Wednesday and Thursday grosses were counted as part of its "Opening Weekend." Just more box office manipulation of the numbers.

While it doesn't happen often, it isn't entirely uncommon across the entertainment industry. Movies freqeuntly do this (open on a Tuesday or Wednesday instead of Friday), albums occasionally do this, and videos do as well.

Like BigDave said, they did this with Shrek when Monsters Inc was released in theaters. I view it as nothing more than Dreamworks trying to steal some of Pixar's thunder.

I agree, but I think it has more to do with increasing sales of the DVD (since interest in computer animated movies would be higher with both released) as opposed to hurting the otehr film, since I don't think a DVD release really hurts BO potential. It surely didn't hurt either last time around.

It's an attempt to get some sort of sells from Incredibles, But it doesn't really work as well.
