So, what's everyones magic number on this disc? I got 301! The person on Home Theater Forum who pointed this out has 302. It appears to be some form of copy protection so they can track down the bootleggers. This appears at 17:37 on the lower left. We'll play a game. Whoever has the highest number wins.

I plan on picking up the latest Harold dvd today at lunch. I didn't see it in the theater, so I'm looking forward to it tonight. I might "highten" the experience, as well.

Thats just stupid! The next thing will be that we get the ugly anti copy brown spots on the transfers!

I just picked up my copy from CC ($15!), and I have to say, I'm really let down that this release is in a keep case. This is gonna look out of place next to the other two. Boo, Hiss, WB, or as I saw in the Matrix review, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!!

The number kind of reminds me of the old "AB" logo on D. W. Griffith's American Biograph films. The were painted right on the sets!

How, exactly?

That is, say I get number 318 on the edition I buy from Wal-Mart. I make a billion bootleg copies and sell them at flea markets and online outlets around the world. Other people bootleg my bootleg and pretty soon there are 10x a billion of these floating out there, all with the number 318 at that particular point of the film.

How does the number 318 get them any closer to the source (me)? Nobody has any fricken clue what number I have.

The number doesn't tell them who made the copy or stop anyone from making more copies. This isn't like an Oscar screener where they know what #s match up to what members. It's random.

yeah, but the number at least tells them what region of the US the bootlegger is, it's a start *shrug*

I just don't see it.

If I live in New York and order from DVDPlanet, my DVD will be coming from California. How does that number tell them what region of the US I'm from?

And, even if it did, what good is that news? Warner will know that these billion of DVD bootlegs are coming from New York. Great. They've now narrowed it down to several million people. Problem solved!

good point about mail orders... maybe they're tracking the retailers with the numbers, so they can see where the early copy leaked from? Dunno...

Well if they are keeping track of what stores get the numbers, they'll at least know what store that DVD was sold in - and possibly the day and time it was sold too if they've done something similar to the bar codes on each DVD. If the store in question keeps a log of their video security and receipts of purchases in their computers, you punch up the date, the time, check out who's standing at the register, and viola! Bootlegger caught. At least in my Alias/24 version of the world.

Good plan, except that the boxed set has the first 2 in the original digipacks and only the third in a keepcase.

How long does the number stay on screen? It it only appears in one or two frames, whats the big deal? Its not like you can really see it going by so fast. Judging by the image above, it blends into the scene as if the number was a part of the set. Unless it is really obvious while watching, I could personally care less if it is there.

I think the point is more -- why is it there in the first place? Again, I challenge someone to provide me with a logical reason for it's inclusion. I can't think of a single way this can be used to thwart bootleggers.

It's just a number on the screen. Whether I'm viewing a legit DVD or a boot, the number doesn't mean shit.
