Are you a latecomer to DVD?

This is a question for those people who got their first DVD player within the past 2-3 years. When did you get your first DVD player, and why'd you wait as long as you did to get one?

For the record, I'm probably middle of the curve for adopting DVD. I got my first DVD player in the Summer of 1999. I waited as long as I did because I didn't even have a TV or VCR between 1996-1999. I was busy doing other things and didn't think much about homeviewing. Now I have a home theater and a sizable DVD collection, though I still don't have cable television or even a television tuner.

I got my first REAL DVD player until 2001, mainly because I was a student before then.

I got my first player about a year and a half ago. I waited because I thought my VCR did a decent enough job and DVDs seemed way overpriced compared to tapes for a while.

Bought my DVD player in 2001. I actually received DVDs as gifts prior to owning the player. Once I had three or four titles I figured it was time to break down and buy a player so I did.

Fall of 2001 was when I first bit the bullet and got a player and starting buying DVDs. My VHS collection was so large, I really held out as long as I could before finally crumbling.

In retrospect I wish I hadn't waited as long as I did, obviously.

I bought in during December 2000 for Xmas. I only had about 10-15 tapes, but DVD made me like movies more in general and I started buying and seeing a lot more. I found my tastes also changed and I realized most new movies are crap. Oh well. :)

I got my first player in April 2002. It was the Apex-3201 from Comp USA. I think it was $89.99 with a $30 or $40 rebate.

I graduated college in 2001 and never liked leaching off of my parents so I couldn't afford a DVD player until I started working.

I got my first DVD-ROM in Oct 1999.

I'm sort of a latecomer, i got my first dvd player in 2000, but started collecting dvds like 5 months ago. I never really paid attention to dvds just rented or bought very few, until about 5 months ago when i saw all the neat stuff on dvd.

tell me if im in the right path of collecting dvds?

I got my first DVD in summer 1997. It was "Goldeneye" in the snapper case. It was the demo disc that we played when the Sears i worked at (Littleton, CO) first started selling DVD. The first player I owned was March, 1998, in the form of a 1x DVD-ROM Hi-Val upgrade kit for my computer.

I bought my first DVD in May 2002 (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - $9.99 at CompUSA), but I didn't get a player to play it on until that December.

Ha, that's almost the exact same thing that happened to me. I only had a handful of tapes and I'd only just recently started renting movies when I got a DVD player for Christmas 2000. Now I've seen movies I never even knew existed back then.

Kinda my reasoning too. I got my first player in May 2003. I had, and still have, a good bit of movies on VHS, and before I got the player I just didn't see the need.

But then I noticed a lot of the old TV shows coming out on DVD. And then I noticed how new movies were coming out first or only on DVD, and the VHS selections were dwindling. I've replaced some of my worn out/poor looking VHS movies with DVD.

Now I'm hooked on DVD quality and OAR presentation. I also like how movies are being restored/cleaned up/improved for DVD.
