However, the first season of "Monty Python's Flying Circus" was released in September of 1999.

Does the o.p. mean season or series? I read it as series. Maybe it is just me.

Yep, me too. Either way, it's kinda leans to the X-Files.

Not sure what you guys are getting the at with the "series" thing (complete series)?

Another vote for Avengers, didn't they have 2 or 3 seasons on DVD in 1999?

Since the title said season, i see no reason to assume he meant series.

Except of course for the two shows that were released before "The X-Files," making it kinda lean against "The X-Files."

Unless you spell series "s-e-a-s-o-n," they I would say he meant season.

Well when what "s-e-a-s-o-n" has been on dvd first has been discussed a dozen times before I would think someone would be smart enough to do a search. Where as now a few shows are getting to the end of a series on DVD so it would make more sense to discuss or be curious about that.

I don't think the OP meant series or season. I think he meant what TV show sequel was first released on DVD. I also think he didn't want us to consider anime titles, foreign titles of any kind, titles starting with numbers or vowels, comedies, dramas, or really any shows other than Star Trek. Therefore, the correct answer is Star Trek: The Next Generation.

I don't think it matters if we consider anime. The first anime TV series released on R1 DVD was Battle Athletes Victory, and that didn't finish its release until late 1999.

Finally, the definitive answer.

You mean, someone didn't use the search function. Gasp! To shame!!!

The Avengers, The Twilight Zone, Star Trek and Monty Python all had episode DVDs released prior to the first Season of The X-Files, but I believe The X-Files was the first full season set. I know The Avengers releases split up the seasons into different sets...not sure if Monty Python did or not (Star Trek & Twilight Zone only offered a couple of shows per DVD).

Thanks for all the informative (and amusing) responses. When I asked the question, I was actually thinking of entire seasons, not just series.

What prompted my curiosity was the following item I read on the web, which might be of interest to people looking to fill holes in their collections:

With little promotion, Amazon.com has begun selling boxed sets of several TV DVDs at a fraction of the regular list prices. According to Video Store magazine, sets that are ordinarily priced at $39.98 to $59.88 at other retailers are selling at $14.99 on Amazon. They include: The Simpsons: The Complete First Season, 24: Season One, Roswell: The Complete First Season, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Complete First Season, Angel: Season One, King of the Hill: The Complete First Season and Futurama: Vol. 1. In addition, the online retailer is offering $15 pricing on a number of upcoming releases. Fox declined comment on the pricing.

Official TVShowsOnDVD.com response:

  • 04/27/99 Fishing With John - Special Edition (Criterion Collection) (6 episodes; entire series)

  • 10/05/99 Spawn - The Ultimate Collection (18 episodes; all three seasons)

  • 10/12/99 South Park - Volumes 1-3 (12 episodes: all from S1 and a few from S2)

  • 05/09/00 The X-Files - The Complete 1st Season (24 episodes)

  • 05/23/00 Sex and the City - The Complete 1st Season (12 episodes)

  • 07/25/00 Kindred: The Embraced - Complete Vampire Collection (8 episodes; entire series)

A&E shows at the time - like Avengers and Monty Python -had "Volume" releases with pairs of discs and then pairs of the pairs, and each disc had like 3 eps each (give or take one). No season sets up to that point. Star Trek TOS had single-disc releases with two eps each, no collections. Twilight Zone had single-disc releases that had 3-4 eps each, and collected the first 5 releases into a box set for the 40th anniversary of the show, but since the eps were in random order from the entire run of the series, it can't be said to be a season release.

We show The Sopranos having it's first season release in December 2000, not in May. Amazon agrees, for what it's worth. I can check with the studio if that's not good enough.

On the terminology front: don't forget that in Britain a "season" is called a "series", and so what they call "Are You Being Served? - Series 1" refers to the first season of the show, as Americans term it. We use "Series" as a synonym for "Show" or "Property", and Brits use "Series" as a synonym for "Season".

Considering the different and incorrect assumptions about what did come out first, i don't think searching for previous threads in this case is a big deal.
