Does anyone have a Sight and Sound Subscription?
I wasn't sure where exactly to put this thread since it isn't explicitly about movies or dvds. I toyed with the idea of putting it in "other" but we never talk about movie stuff there. I put it here because Sight and Sounds has movie reviews.
Does anyone subscribe to this English Magazine? If so what do you think? I'm considering getting one because the snippets I've read are very interesting but the cost is pretty high and would include shipping to the US. Any comments would be appreciated. |
My local library used to carry this. Sometimes you can get your library to pick up more expensive/obscure magazines.
Give it a shot. |
It's a very good magazine, but it asks a lot of the reader. In an article on Iranian films, there's not going to be a little side chart with bios or anything. You'll just have to know.
I read every issue at Borders. The idea of buying a movie magazine at this point is just silly; any news in them you find online nowadays. Some I like to read just for the style of writing. With Sight & Sound, I may one day make an exception - it's exceptional. |
It would be nice if they had a cheaper online subscription service. Thanks for the responses.

Its a cross between a magazine and film journal so if you do have some background on film knowledge, its a good magazine

Good mag, but I agree with those who bemoan the cost. I got a subscription as a gift; I don't know if I would buy it for myself.

Yeah, I have a subscription. It's not 'English', it's British. You can reads lots of their articles free at www.bfi.org.uk Also of interest www.screenonline.org.uk |

I subscribe to Sight & Sound over here in the UK.
It's the definitive serious movie fan's magazine each month - no question. As has previously been commented upon, it asks a lot of you intellectually, but maybe that's a good thing in these sound-bite, low attention span times that we live in now. Sure, way cheaper if you're a Brit living in God's own country, but I cannot recommend it highly enough if you're serious about film. |
so are the articles written in English or British?
Are you being stupid, ignorant or a smart arse (ass)? They couldn't be written in British as it's not a language. It is written in International English. If you'd said the 'English language magazine' that would be different. I wouldn't ask you if Variety was in American English though would I? No. If you're offended by the above, stick with the TV Guide. |

I'm not being nasty. I get bored with ignorant people.

It was just a friendly rebuttal to your response to the guy asking about english magazines..seems you got offended at him saying English instead of British..and I did thank you for the links too..lighten up on the superiority thing ..lifes too short |

Yes, after some refelction, I apolgoise.
Not that I regret what I said. Ignorance about 'England' is rife in the USA. Quite a few non-English British soldiers have been killed in Iraq fighting with the USA. I don't think Canadians are from the USA so I'd expect Americans to know the difference. It's part of a deeper problem I guess. And this is what starts wars. |
About Sight and Sound, I had a subscription for most of the 90's (when it ran $60 US a year).
While it usually had some interesting stuff, I more and more got frustrated by how poorly they fact check it. Each issue was filled with mistakes, talking about different films. The corrections column they run each month is longer than most magazines out there. As a reader, I didn't feel comfortable paying so much for a subscription when I knew more about film than the writers so I cancelled it. I'd suggest going with FILM COMMENT or CINEASTE, US film magazines that are much smarter (and cheaper). Even PREMIERE seems to be doing well these days. It is worth looking at if you see it on newstands, but definitely not worth the rather high price of a subscription. |

Originally posted by chente Does anyone subscribe to this English Magazine? Originally posted by Daniel Windsor Yeah, I have a subscription. It's not 'English', it's British. Since chente used an uppercase E, he is right. It's an English magazine; it comes from England. It's an english magazine; it doesn't necessarily come from England, but it's printed in english. He could have said "British" instead, but who cares? |
