The One Error in Jedi that Makes Me Crazy (spoiler)

At the end of Jedi, Luke and Vader fight. When Luke is getting the upper hand, Vader falls down before Luke strikes him and cuts off his hand. It's always bugged me.

Couldn't they have fixed that. Lucas says that they have an editing technique where they can cut the frame in half and alter the pacing of scenes. This would have been a good place to use that editing button.

Deadman31 10-10-04 10:12 AM

Why does this bother you?

AdamComic2 10-10-04 02:12 PM

That's not really an error. You can hear Vader becoming more and more winded and he's being overwhelmed by Luke who's kicking his ass. I really like the falling down.

Fok 10-10-04 10:28 PM

Falling down part looks okay to me, why would this be an error?

bboisvert 10-11-04 12:21 PM

Vader's getting his ass kicked. His falling is what gives Luke the opening to cut off his hand.

It ain't an error and I have no clue why this bugs you. :hscratch:

jaeufraser 10-11-04 03:07 PM

Yeah no kidding. You can fall down for other reasons than having your hand cut off. Luke had just gone a little crazy and was beating Vadar bad, winding him til he falls over, which gives Luke the chance to lop his hand off. Makes sense to me.

Eplicon 10-11-04 03:24 PM

Luke had youth and an entire (physical) body surging with the dark side to overcome Vader at that point.

GuessWho 10-11-04 11:37 PM

exactly!! the fact that luke still attacked while his opponent was down showed that he had dark side starting to form inside him

Jackskeleton 10-11-04 11:58 PM

like guess said. it was to show that luke was just that close to turning to the darkside.

DonnachaOne 10-12-04 12:03 AM

That?

THAT'S the one error?

... the ONE error?

Actually I always thought that they way it happened looked cheesy. The way Vader fell didn't look right, almost like he set himself up to be defeated, falling on purpose. If that's the case, then the scene works, otherwise it is a poor performance.

I'd rather they fixed Boba Fett's mirror image shots in Jabba's Palace.

Not that I noticed that (I'll have to watch for it when I listen to the commentary), but hell, I'd fix his death...assuming he did indeed die. Like have him use his jet pack to get out or some such.

Also, I wasn't too crazy about putting a wormy head to the Sarlaac (Saarlac?) creature. Sure it was a rather inactive looking pit, but it made me think it just worked the same way an antlion pit does. Something about the wormy head just doesn't seem right. Maybe that it reminds me of the wormy head in ESB when they escape the "cave"? Maybe somehow it looks too fake...maybe it's just because I don't remember it from the first time around....

Anyways.....

Spiky 10-14-04 12:20 PM

He got out later. Apparently he didn't "taste too good". Sorry, that line is no longer part of ESB, is it? Oh, well. Too much metal for ol' Sarlaac.

I thought this thread would be about the glitch on the Emperor's cloak, not the acting ability of whats-his-name.

Yeah, that's one change that REALLY bugged me. I don't understand that change at all.

Vader fell for no reason. What it looks like is that Vader threw himself down. But it doesn't look like the character did it. It looks like the actor knew that it was time to do his blocking.

The moment is the culmination of what would will be 6 movies. Think they'd be more careful than that.

Sorry. It isnt an error. Vader just become overwhelmed by Luke's power and relentlessness and fell.

FilmStudent 10-19-04 09:09 PM

I don't know if it's an "error" but it always drives me crazy.

Yea, but the 'acting' is horrible in that part. The actor just didn't 'sell' that scene.

Kube 10-19-04 09:56 PM

I.Like.It - exactly. That's what i was trying to say.

MJKTool 10-21-04 02:09 PM

I agree. I recently watched ROTJ and that fall glaringly stood out to me this time around.

He wasn't completely surging with the dark side otherwise he would of tried to sever Vaders head or more vital organs, rather than his hand. Notice that during the final blows of the saber, that Luke is striking Vaders saber to get it out of his hand, rather than attacking vaders head or body, which was completely exposed and unprotected. Luke did have anger and hate in his heart at that moment, but he wasn't completely won over by the dark side, otherwise Vader would of died at THAT exactly moment, by a more lethal blow.
