Does anyone know if this thing works with DVD-Rs? If so, I might be tempted to get one.

do NOT buy this! I ordered mine a week ago to rewind all my Blockbuster rentals and it ATE my DVDs!

The problem is with double-sided DVDs.

While you are rewinding one side, the other side is now fast-forwarding.

There is no right answer. :(
