Hitchcock's LIFEBOAT coming to DVD! (10.18.05)
The last Hitchcock feature is finally being released on DVD!
It has been confirmed that USC film professor Drew Casper has recorded a commentary for the film this past Monday.
So it would be safe to expect a 2005 release as part of the Fox Studio Classics line.

When Lifeboat is released - all of the sound pictures both color and black white will be released?
And all of the known silent pictures will be released?
The only thing left will be incomplete works?
I thought he directed 53 films.

Also, completed silents that still haven't been released:
The Pleasure Garden (1925)
Downhill (1927)
I have copies of them and (Waltzes From Vienna) on VHS.
Anxiously awaiting Lifeboat on DVD (one more Laserdisc I'll be able to retire).

Once this is released, every one of his American films from 1940 to 1976 will be on DVD.
Now, we just need to see his British films get some decent treatment. Only The Lady Vanishes and The 39 Steps have quality releases!

Also, on the sound-side, 'Mary' also exists (one copy at least), but isn't available or anything.
I'm still hoping some company will put out a "Hitchcock on TV" disc to fill in the three hour-long shows he did (the one for Hitchcock Hour [which is available in R2, Japan I think], the one for "Suspicion", and the one for "Startime", which I have a VHS copy of).

This guy is a real piece of work. Took his class freshman year, way back when, as a GE cake class (Cinema 190). Even though every single class was basically an hour of lecture, and then a movie for the last two hours (in the all to comfy USC theatre), I vowed never to take another Cinema class again once the semester was complete (and got an A of course).
Most kids loved the class, but I, and a few others, read his alterior political agenda loud and clear.
Suffice to say that I hope he doesn't go on his usual rant about how heterosexual love is all too often a common theme in modern cinema, and lets leave it at that.

Drew Casper seems like a very good choice, after all, he teaches an entire class devoted to Hitchcock. Check out his commentary on The Asphalt Jungle if you want to assess his commentary abilities.

I am not doubting his love of film or his keen knowledge of the director and cinema et al. I'm sure he is extremely knowledgable on all aspects and provides an enthralling commentary, and like I said, most students (and DVD viewers, I gather), enjoyed his commentary/lecture quite a bit.
Personally, I just don't like the guy.
