Untouchables SE: Anyone watch it yet?

I'd love to hear about the extras. Are they any good.

Kube 10-01-04 09:57 PM

For what it's worth, Entertainment Weekly gave it a good review.

digitalfreaknyc 10-02-04 12:36 AM

It's not out yet.

Same video & audio from prior release. I'm passing.

Your first review link says the audio is improved. The second says it's the same.

My biggest disappointment with the first was the poor sound quality (which the second review link thought was fine) and the lack of extras. If there's a chance of improved sound, and some good extras, I think I'll double dip on this one.

Thanks for the reviews!

Probably one of the worst dvd reviewers out there. They seem to like everything and base their reviews of dvds simply on if they like the movie or not.

I'm interested in knowing about the audio & video on this one as well as I have the original release but did not want to double dip just for a few extras.

Me too. Even at $9-$10 on release day, it's not worth a double dip if picture and audio are the same.

Fartface 10-05-04 08:45 AM

I would think the problem with any DePalma dvd would be his lack of interest in doing a commentary. In fact, he refuses to watch any of his films once they're released.

asianxcore 10-05-04 09:41 AM

there was a review of the new Region 2 version of Untouchables in the international forum. I think it mentioned the video was anamorphic, but the audio track remained the same.

digitalfreaknyc 10-05-04 10:13 AM

Video was always anamorphic.

REL77 10-05-04 10:34 AM

damn, maybe i shoudl have read this before I purchased this!

the dvdauthority review says new Dolby Digital EX audio.

digitalfreaknyc 10-05-04 12:09 PM

Yeah. Ex. And the sound mix still sucks. With these paramount releases, you always have to use the original Dolby Surround.

young 10-05-04 09:34 PM

what is w/ the "no insert" and the funky case?

i almost broke it trying to open it before i realized that there are a couple of tabs to release. (i was trying to open it in the dim light of my home theater).

for a special edition, it doesn't feel that special but it certainly explains the $10 price tag.

Kube 10-06-04 08:59 PM

DePalma has said that he's never been asked to do a commentary.

Tarantino 10-06-04 11:47 PM

Those cases are becoming more and more common now, although I don't understand it. Those cases are downright horrible.

Mad Dawg 10-07-04 10:38 AM

I don't mind the tabbed cases as long as they start getting rid of the security stickers.

Josh Z 10-07-04 10:54 AM

The tabs can be easily snipped off with scissors. Then it's a normal keepcase.

Exactly my reason for sticking with the original release. So far...I have not seen anything to make me change my mind. If a studio is going to release a movie for a second time, they should at least make it worthwhile for the consumer.

Dazed 10-07-04 01:11 PM

I never bought the original release probably becasue at the time it was so damn expensive compared to other studios releases.

I may pick up this though since its a great film.

Completely agree. This release is pretty thin...period. I'm a sucker for re-releases so it's mine but beyond that...no reason.

Red Dog 10-07-04 02:33 PM

I was at Costco yesterday and saw it for $8.79. Seemed like a good deal and I didn't already own it, so I picked it up.

JasonF 10-07-04 02:50 PM

I held off on buying this for a long time because I knew a Special Edition was coming. I guess I should have gone ahead and bought the regular edition, but oh well.

On the plus side, I only spent $8.50 -- I'm sure I would have spent at least twice that much if I had bought the original release a year or two ago.
